New Scientist reported today that South Korean researchers have created the first transgenic dog by inserting a fluorescent gene from sea anemones into dog fibrolast cells.

The researchers, led by Byeong-Chun Lee of Seoul National University, said the dogs were ‘proof-of-principle’ experiments.  New Scientist quotes one of the researchers, CheMyong Kyo, as saying that the experiment should open the door for transgenic dog models of human disease.  That is, dogs will be deliberately modified to exhibit disease symptoms and pathologies.

At a time when the use of dogs and cats in research has been declining (a 50% decline since 1979, according to the CDC), this is a step in exactly the wrong direction.

For each and every Care2 member. Google glowing mice and kittens. Guess what? It's been happening here in the good ole' USA for years now. It's been used to identify many diseases. I think it would be best to read before jumping to conclusions.

Dearest Care2,

Please stop trying to report science. Hippies are not intelligent enough to grasp the wonders of this world.

Bob B So you think each country should function totally independently and no other country in the world can have any say about anything that they do no matter what it is? That's completely absurd and not the reality.
You told other people to learn about what they were talking about....? I think that in fact applies to you!

Bob,

Anyone with morals, ethics and kindness will at any and all times do everything to promote animal peace and protection wherever the incidents/agony takes place. It is too painful for those who care more than the next guy (that be bob) to shrug off the merciless treatment of god's good creatures.

"Every animal knows more than you do. "Native American Proverb (Nez Perce) especially when you are bob.

Bob B, i don;t think you love animals just as much as the next guy, you would not be sayin that if you did. any one no matter who they are what thier excuse is, has no right to do this to any animal. it is not about interfering it is about being the voice for the voiceless and proteting the innncoent. it is about being humane.

Animals are voiceless so they are esy to abuse, this shows abuse, disrespect and vileness within on our side. stop this abuse, no animal of any kind should have to endure this suffering.

This is blatant animal abuse. The WSPA should investigate these so-called scientists! How can man's best friend be treated like this?

This is complete Animal Abuse and the WSPA should investigate these doctors. How can anyone justify this sort of experiments on Man's best friend!
