Florida Congressman Allen West has been known to make a controversial remark or two. But calling a large chunk of the House Democrats “Communists?” Well, that’s fairly big even for him.
The Palm Beach Post reports, “The conservative tea party icon also got in shots at Democrats and President Obama, who spoke Tuesday at Florida Atlantic University. West said Obama was ‘scared’ to have a discussion with him. He later said ‘he’s heard’ up to 80 U.S. House Democrats are Communist Party members, but wouldn’t name names.”
So, who are these evil, mysterious Communists lurking in the halls of the Capitol? Well, now the Republican Congressman says he was referring to the “Progressive Caucus,” a sub group of Democrats who promote “Fighting for economic justice and security” for all Americans. “The Congressman was referring to the 76 members of the Congressional Progressive Caucus. The Communist Party has publicly referred to the Progressive Caucus as its allies. The Progressive Caucus speaks for itself. These individuals certainly aren’t proponents of free markets or individual economic freedom.”
West, who has been redistricted into a much more competitive race to keep his House seat, has been speculated on as a possible running mate for Mitt Romney. We’ll see if that speculation continues after this incident.
