Voices Urgently Needed to Save 2,500 Wild Horses in Nevada

Despite public outcry, it would appear the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is still up to their old shenanigans with new plans to round up 2,500 more wild horses in Nevada. That’s 80 percent of the wild horses in the Calico Complex located in the northwestern part of the state.
From In Defense of Animals:
The U.S. General Accounting Office (GAO) has found that "BLM’s decisions on how many wild horses to remove from federal rangelands were not based on direct evidence that wild horse populations exceeded what the range could support and that removals were often not accompanied by reductions in livestock grazing levels or range management to increase the land’s capacity."
The Calico Complex roundup plan continues BLM policy of removing wild horses, who are supposed to be protected by an act of Congress, for the benefit of private ranchers who graze their livestock on our public lands at bargain basement rates. The plan is an example of BLM's gross mismanagement of our wild horses and public lands.
While the BLM intends to massively round up and remove thousands of horses purportedly over concerns about the health of the range, it refuses to even consider removing any of the more than 2,000 head of cattle currently grazing in the same area. A more cost-effective and long-term solution to preserving range health must include buying back cattle leases on public lands like the Calico Complex, which have been designated to be for the primary benefit of wild horses.

Maybe the Ranchers (or cattlemen?) would be happy to help in the preservation of the wild horse if the government could give them a subsidy or payment for the management of the horses.

As long as there is money to be made, and lets face it, the govmt makes money by leasing those lands to the ranchers, they do not make money by running wild horses and burros. If the govmt was being paid to run those wild animals (that have a right to be there!) this would be a success story. not an ongoing tragedy!

I wish Lived on land for horses That is one my favorite animals. I owned 2 when I was kid. My horse stepped on my foot accidently and he was upset he know he hurt me.

I've written so much on this issue, I don't want to bore anyone to death but PLEASE STAY STRONG AND ACTIVE in this process. We are the ONLY voice OUR wonderful wild horses and burros have. Please push for the MORATORIUM on ALL ROUNDUPS so that we have the chance to investigate the current policies that have been so detrimental to the horses, burros and public lands. The facts and truth will out if we stay cohesive as a group. With ONE LARGE VOICE we can be heard. Current info and contacts are posted at www.aowha.org. All my Best.

The majority of these horses will probably not be adopted in these tough economic times. A lot of them will probably be shipped to Canada or Mexico for slaughter. Such a disgrace!
