When Pets Become Guinea Pigs

Whatever the reason pets are given up, it’s slightly comforting to think that the people who surrender them to shelters are at least trying to make an attempt to give them a chance at a new life and a new forever home. Unfortunately, that’s not always the case.
A new study, Dying to Learn: Exposing the Supply of Dogs and Cats to Higher Education, has exposed the practice of colleges and universities using former pets for dissections, surgeries and other experiments.
There were 92 schools used in the study, which found that many are unethically sourcing animals, along with using them for unnecessary procedures. Additionally, violations were found regarding dealers who supply these schools.
Class B dealers, who supply many of these animals, often obtain them through shelters, classified ads, auctions and according to the USDA, even theft.
On the flip side, the study also found that students can learn just as well through alternative teaching methods that can include hands on training at shelters for vet students and simulators, that have been approved by the American College of Surgeons, for medical students.
Oklahoma State University’s Veterinary School, for example, just ended the use of terminal surgeries on dogs, and has started a new program for vet students that involves spay/neuter surgery training for shelter animals that will be placed up for adoption afterwards.
We don’t need to torture and kill to learn. Please take action through the American Anti-Vivisection Society to cut off Class B dealers, and to stop pound seizures and sales.

If people would be more responsible about spaying and neutering their pets, and not be so willing to surrender them to shelters for the sake of convenience, the supply of animals for this purpose would dry up.
The problem isn't the schools. It's irresponsible owners, backyard breeders, and puppy mills.

Killing for learning reinforces the Sarah Palin syndrome of kill kill kill and kill again, it's bloody fun! Keep killing out of schools! Schools should reinforce ethical concepts of kindness and compassion which are hardly compatable with children butchering small creatures! Personally I was revolted by seeing earthworms boiled alive in the classroom as a child prior to dissection!

Every time I see articles etc on animal testing, experimenting etc I ask the same question: What gives us the right to do such horrific acts? why do we (ie humans) seem to believe that we are somehow "better" than other living beings, and are therefore justified in using everything/one around us to our gain? Of course my answer is "WE DON'T"
(PS Christianity, mostly Catholicism, is largely to thank for the twisted belief that we are "better" and "entitled" to exploit all around us)

I truly hope that "The majority of the people of our world who are taking these issues very seriously, will no longer tolerate this archaic mind set". YET Demand from our exuberantly Tax Paid Government Officials to make the much needed & necessary changes toward animal welfare, conservation & environmental issues, which have been Ignored, but are yet so important to the people of Our world.
Pass laws which allow Convicted Hyannis Criminals to be forced into experimental research. The crime rate would drastically go down, The tax paid prison system would become more Beneficial, and the Death Penalty can then be eliminated. See all the good this would do?
Animal research is outdated, unnecessary, & inconclusive to human treatment. Shelters selling off animals for research is just another exploitation of innocent animals for MONEY, not for any cures.
Yet our prisons are over populated with Hyannis Criminals continue to Live an all Expensed Paid Lfe from Our Limited Tax Dollars. No More.
Government Officials either make animal welfare, conservation & environmental issues a Priority, or WE Vote New Officials into office who Will.

ANIMAL CRUELTY, TORTURE, TESTING & SLAUGHTER SHOULD BE OUTLAWED WITH IMMEDIATE EFFECT. I have signed every petition I come across on various sites, saving our baby seals, ending puppy mills, stopping elephant & other animal culls, laboratory testing on animals & many many other forms of barbaric physical and mental abuse. The majority of the people of our world are taking these issues very seriously and will not longer tolerate this archaic mindset and we will NOT be ignored. Never have animal welfare, conservation & environmental issues been so important to the people of our world. Especially now we have the internet and we can reach millions of people worldwide through networks of animal welfare & earth conservation sites. The ripples of our voices can be heard right across the globe & we are getting stronger. We must be the voice for the beautiful animals of our world and keep fighting for them while we walk this earth.
I believe we are turning a corner.

All four of our girls are rescues of one kind or another, they would have had bad ends. One is my aid dog, she speaks words that are understandable even to strangers. She is fully a person, even my mom who is not really a pet person said you can understand her I do. I said well shes a people, it really changed moms mind I think about just what an animal is. 2 of them came to us from shelter, underfed , starving and fearful now they are happy and part of the family.
Experimenting on people whether they are the 4 paw furry kind or not should not be guinea pigs if they cannot consent.

yes experment on thoese PEOPLE on death row with dna evedence against them instead of them have appeals after appeals/wasting our tax payers $$ feeding & housing them 4 yaers experment on them /they had no problem killing & molesting & raping(to all u dogooders they r not able to be rehabilitated)give them a taste of their own medicine (eye 4 eye).mabey this will make others stop & think b4 they commit a haniouis crime.Some countries cut ur hand of just 4 stealing !!

I completely agree with the comment before me. It did start with man and we are the ones running this world into the ground. These animals are all just trying to survive and they deserve justice and rights. They deserve to be loved and to have people stand up and be their voice for them. I completely agree that we should be doing these testings or other testings on the people on death row or who are in for serious crimes. They chose to do these things and so why not put them to use now and not waste our hard earned money on keeping them somewhere where they are taken care of.
