Archie, Betty, Veronica… and Kevin: The New Kid in School is Gay

Archie, Betty, Veronica… and Kevin: The New Kid in School is Gay

Perennial high school student Archie has spent decades trying to decide between Betty and Veronica. Some things never change in Riverdale. But some things do.

In a press release issued a few days ago, Archie Comics announced the introduction of the first openly gay character to join the student body of Riverdale High School. Archie, Betty, Veronica, Reggie, and Jughead are about to meet the new kid in town, Kevin Keller.

Jon Goldwater, CEO of Archie Comics put it this way, “The introduction of Kevin is just about keeping the world of Archie Comics current and inclusive. Archie’s hometown of Riverdale has always been a safe world for everyone. It just makes sense to have an openly gay character in Archie comic books.”

The story line centers around the ever-popular and beautiful Veronica. Apparently the only one unaware of his sexual orientation, she sets her romantic sights on the handsome but unresponsive newcomer. Set for a September release, Kevin’s introduction comes in an issue titled, Veronica #202 “Isn’t it Bromatic?”

Watch this FeastofFun.com interview with Archie writer and artist Dan Parent:

Personally, I’m not a big comic book fan. I read some Archie comics as a kid, but haven’t given the gang much thought since then. Like I imagine is the case with a lot of folks, I was first inclined to wonder what all the fuss was about.

There are plenty of people like me who see sexual orientation as but one part of who we are as human beings. It does not define our character or say anything at all about the kind of people we are. People who are gay are interesting and dull, funny and sober, intelligent and ignorant, honest and dishonest, introverted and extroverted, kindhearted and mean-spirited… well, you get my point. As impossible to define as heterosexuals. Of course, not everyone agrees.

Take a spin around the blogosphere and you’ll find that even comic books are not immune to anti-gay sentiment. There is fear of “indoctrination” and the “liberal agenda” of trying to get us used to “gayness” and diversity when we’re young…

The word controversial is also being used, but I don’t see why it has to be. Kevin is just another kid at school, with his own unique attributes. The fact that he is gay really shouldn’t make much of a difference. Pick out any high school. There are gay kids attending, whether you know about them or not. They’ve always been with us and they always will be with us. Why shouldn’t they be able to pick up a comic book and see a character who just happens to be gay? Getting used to diversity is not a bad thing.

Real flesh and blood high school kids who happen to be gay are still having a hard time with acceptance in the year 2010. Witness high school girl Constance McMillen’s story. It began with her wanting to attend her high school prom and lead to death threats.

And Care2 writer Steve Williams’ own coming out story:

High school shouldn’t have to be that difficult. It’s only a comic book, but the in-crowd at Riverdale High will make sure that it’s not that difficult for Kevin.

Just because something is abnormal doesn't make it unnatural, or bad. It is abnormal to have red hair, an above-average IQ, or an unusually tall or short stature. Those things aren't good or bad, they're just less common variations of natural human characteristics. Also, the argument that homosexuality is unnatural because it doesn't produce kids is bogus. Gays have been having kids for centuries. Besides, there are a lot of heterosexuals who can't have kids...are you going to say that they're unnatural, too? Do you think they are pretending to be to be infertile to get attention? Consider the possibility that maybe God didn't want to make every single person capable of reproducing.

Great! This new character makes the world of the Archie series much more believable. Kevin's sexual orientation is not in the least bit out of place - the Archie series is all about crushes and teen romance, so they might as well depict it realistically.

"I hate to break it to the world, but homo- sexuality is not normal behavior,"
According to who? YOU? How do you explain the fact that throughout all species there is homosexual behavior? Male dolphins often mate with other males; some dogs will "hump" anything legs, arms, chairs, the same sex of their species - even if they have been spayed or neutered. Sex is not just for procreation.
Are you depending upon Leviticus? Well, when you start stoning your children for smarting off; go back to wearing animal skins - nothing synthetic; stoning adulterers; not eating shellfish or pork and all of the other things passages in Leviticus mention - then you might have a chance of making me believe that GOD doesn't like it. But God didn't even consider it important enough to make it one of the BIG 10. Jesus never even spoke about it. These are facts.
So, I won't call you a hater - but you are mistaken. I don't mind you standing up for your beliefs and for having the courage of your convictions. But your statement was merely your opinion & you should have stated it as such.

I am happy to know about the comics. We are a melting pot, with different views, tendencies, religions, races etc etc... who like to see things that we are related or identify with. Gays or lesbians or whatever, are in this world LONG before our time. Let's give them the R E S P E C T and L O V E that they D O deserve, hurray ...... !!!!!!

I won't mention the 'name' of the person to which I'm responding, but he posted on 4/28, 2:17. If being gay is not normal, maybe not natural, how about gay bashing, circumcision, contraceptives, including the rhythm method or abstinence? Some things that humans do are less common among animals, but it seems those 'pervert' animals are treated better by their own species than are humans. I hope to see the day that transsexuals, bi's and poly's will also be accepted, especially the latter, representing the closest approach to free expression of the goal of universal love. Instead of "Be fruitful and multiply", "Make Love, not babies, and doublely reduce the causes of war."

First off, congrats to the writers and creators of Archie for bringing this character into the comics!!
Now to all of you that have posted here saying that this is unnatural, sick, disgusting, that it brainwashes the kids, Corrupts kids etc. I ask you how does it do this? We don't go around and corrupt anyone. We are born to be who we are. It is not a learned behavior. I've known I was gay since I was 7 years old. Oh and no I was not molested either. So get that out of your sick heads!
It's people like you with your hate filled mind and talk that brings about "homophobia" in the kids of today. We are not going out and chasing after your kids. They are seeing for themselves that no matter what you tell them, Gays are just as normal as the Hetero's.
What would happen if your child came up to you and said "Mom, Dad, I'm gay." Would you tell them they are disgusting and sick? Would you put them in a place that claims to "cure" gays? If that is what would happen then YOU are the ones that are sick and disgusting. YOU should be the ones put in a place to CURE YOUR Homophobia!!
I am sick and tired of seeing the vile hate filled comments when people stand up and try to show that WE ARE NORMAL PEOPLE TO!!
