Arizona is taking up yet another abortion restriction bill, and this latest is among the cruelest we’ve seen.
Arizona House Bill 2036 would ban abortions at 20 weeks and, if passed and enacted, would make it the most extreme abortion ban anywhere in the United States. At the 20 week mark most women have not yet had enough prenatal care to know if the pregnancy poses a threat to their health or if the fetus is even viable. This is just another attempt by legislators to substitute their own political agenda for the very private, personal decisions a woman, her family and her doctor make together.
And Republicans are practically crowing about this. State Representative Terry Proud wrote in an email:
“Personally I’d like to make a law that mandates a woman watch an abortion being performed prior to having a ’surgical procedure.’ …don’t we want more transparency and education in the medical profession anyway? We demand it everywhere else
“Until the dead child can tell me that she/he does not feel any pain — I have no intentions of clearing the conscience of the living — I will be voting YES.”
The curtain has been pulled back on this agenda for everyone to see. Punishing women for the crime of becoming pregnant when they can’t support a pregnancy, for whatever reason, is the principle platform of the right.
