As reported in Talking Points Memo, Secretary of State Ken Bennett told conservative radio talk show host Mike Broomhead that he’s not convinced that President Barack Obama was really born in the United States and is threatening to keep him off the ballot in November.
Bennett admitted he was working off information “uncovered” by Arpaio and has concluded that the birth certificate released last year in a forgery. As a result Bennett is trying to get verification from state officials in Hawaii that the certificate is authentic.
Boy, I bet that never gets old for folks in Hawaii.
Bennett swears this new-found birtherism is not about the president, but rather, protecting the integrity of the election process. And it’s likely not about his own aspirations to be governor either. Gov. Jan Brewer (R) has said she thinks birtherism is a “distraction” that is “leading our country down a path of destruction” and her term is up in two years. Because of Arizona’s term limits law Brewer will be prevented from running for governor again.
