Arpaio Revives Birtherism, GOP Candidates Get In Line
Not content to merely waste Arizona’s tax dollars on vigilante campaigns against Latinos in Arizona, Sheriff Joe Arpaio announced the formation of a “Cold Case Posse” to delve into the issue of President Obama’s birth certificate. The CCP will be an all-volunteer group of people that somehow make them qualified to investigate cases.
The investigation comes after a complaint filed by the Surprise, Arizona Tea Party, which believes the long-form birth certificate already released by President Obama is a forgery.
The CCP had been inactive recently due to “budgetary limitations within the Maricopa County Sheriff’s office” but must have dug up some funding to launch this inquiry. Funny how that happens.
Arpaio is accustomed to courting controversy, so alone this story should come as little surprise. But consider that Republican presidential candidates Rick Perry, Mitt Romney and Michele Bachmann are all vying for Arpaio’s endorsement and all of a sudden the degree to which the Republican party has become radicalized becomes that much more apparent.
