Ashley Judd Preemptively Slut-Shamed in Senate Race

Ashley Judd Preemptively Slut-Shamed in Senate Race

Rumors are flying around Kentucky and Washington DC as actress Ashley Judd appears to be exploring the possibility of challenging Republican Mitch McConnell in the 2014 Senate race. It’s a race that would be bound for fireworks as it is, given McConnell’s take no prisoners approach to opponents combined with his weak performance in the polls and an onslaught of Democratic rage as he’s fingered as one of the main obstructionists in Congress. Judd’s potential candidacy, however, is a real live wire in the race, and Republicans appear to be taking the chance that she might run seriously.

So seriously that they’re already taking opposition research one step further and actively smearing Judd’s public image as fast as they can in order to make her seem as unappealing as possible to Kentucky voters. The star of “Missing,” “Kiss the Girls,” “Where the Heart Isand more is facing a new phase in her life, and it might be an especially hostile one; something she should be no stranger to given her history of activism, but the stakes here are high and Republicans are ready with their gloves off.

It’s hard to keep plans for a potential political campaign secret. Judd’s been meeting with Democratic party officials in and out of Kentucky, which suggests she’s thinking about making a move, and some quiet polling research has been done which would seem to back the idea that Democrats are at least considering a Judd versus McConnell race, testing the waters to determine how she might perform. Right now, she’s trailing him by only nine points, which isn’t bad, especially considering the fact that he won by a mere six points in the last race.

Republicans are taking every step possible to make sure that won’t happen. They are, of course, seizing on her as an example of the Hollywood elite, selectively quoting Judd to make her seem out of touch with her potential constituents in Kentucky. She’s made a number of comments at public events and in activist campaigns that wouldn’t necessarily mesh well with her primarily red home state, including statements about “wintering” in other climes and not “breeding” when she talked about her decision not to have children. Such statements, and others, can be used both in and out of context to reinforce the idea that she doesn’t share the values of many Kentucky voters.

More than that, though, Republicans have turned specifically to slut-shaming her for her career in Hollywood, as Alyssa Rosenberg points out at Think Progress. Like many actresses, Judd has stripped down for a number of roles, highlighting the fact that young actresses are frequently required to do nude or partial nude scenes in order to advance their careers, and that the same doesn’t apply to men. Now, Republicans are seizing on the fact that she’s “bared all” to make it sound like she’d be bad for Kentucky, with a catchphrase so cheesy it almost beggars belief; they’re claiming she has “nothing left to show us.”

Reducing Judd to her body and nothing else is a great move if you want to slut-shame her for career decisions, but it erases the fact that Judd also has a brain, political savvy, popularity and an extensive team of consultants and backers to help her out. Republicans might not like it, but she stands a very real chance in this Senate race, and she might just figure out how to weaponize their own tactics against them; the war on women is alive and well in the GOP, but some voters are showing signs of tiring of it, and Judd might be able to capture their attention just long enough to boot McConnell out of office.

While, Mitch McConnell needs to be replaced (along with lots of others on both sides!) I don't think Ashley Judd is the one to do it. I love her as an actress but not her politics!

When will American politics stop being based on lies and propaganda... it is a time for facts.

Good Morning Paul! How IS life in your Republican bubble of little or no facts???

You are the proof in my point!!! You even managed to twist what I was sayin as well... Now, try to tell me that you do not fit the stereotype.

Here is the original message, read it twice and see if you can get it this time...

SEE!

Republicans are all the same (as you can clearly tell from reading this blog)...

Nothing matters to them but winning, and "the ends always justifies the means" (ie... torture, lying, manipulating facts, and denying facts)..

We don't have to wait for Rush Limbaugh to open his mouth, or wait for another election cycle.

Republican supporters are just wired differently, and they all have certain qualities that make them what they are...

Although it urks everyone else that they are constantly the best example of hypocracy as they are making their morally, and intellectually bankrupt statements (and actions), they each will always simply do or say whatever they think that they need to "to win"!

AND WE HAVE TO JUST ACCEPT IT AND MOVE ON...

Just as we might pass a cow-paddy in a beatiful field of wild flowers... The smell might be very bad and very strong, but we can keep walking and leave that load of crap behind!!!

Dear Paul - I will not leave the Democratic party becuase I don't belong to it. I don't consider myself a liberal in particular or a "loon" & my IQ is 156, what's yours? The statements I presented are true. Perhaps you should check alternative sources yourself. I am not "slut shaming" her but merely pointing out the many foolish actions she has taken (nobody forced her out of her Governership, she quit before her term expired) & false, foolish, not to mention arrogant statements she has made. Stupidity should never be magnified by arrogance eg Coulter. She was not slut shamed by others originally but made herself look foolish by her own ignorance of facts & foreign affairs. She said some really dumb things which Judd has yet to do but, who knows, she may. Let's wait & see how SHE presents herself. Maybe she will deserve the same treatment if she presents herself equally foolishly.Pre-emptive slut-shaming is unreasonable & unfair.Do men get "slut shamed"? Many of them exhuibit reprehensible behaviour on BOTH sides of the political fence. Sexism is one thing. Illuminating stupidity when it effects someones qualification for a position is entirely justified.

As for Ashley... the biggest problem she will have, as I have nothing against her really, sure she has Liberal viewpoints, but that in and of itself is NOT a crime, is that she is a committed Tennessean, having called it home for years. Nashville is where she should be running, not Kentucky. I believe Kentuckians will see that and want someone who is devoted to their state, not just a part-timer looking to find a path into politics.

The problem with Liberals, as I said is not the concepts they promote, but when they believe that their views are the ONLY views of consequence... there is NO alternatives to what they believe. It is that intellectual superiority that creates problems.

Most conservatives are more tolerant. If I don't like something, I either don't eat it, don't watch it, don't listen to it, etc. But when a Liberal doesn't like something, like sugar, salt, soft drinks, whatever, they feel it is their duty to ensure NO ONE can enjoy it,either. Once they believe in something, they try to FORCE those beliefs on EVERYONE. There is no tolerance, there is no live and let live... It is always "live like I do or you are stupid."

that to most of us IS unacceptable. Freedoms are designed for just that reason... to do what I want, when I want, as long as I don't hinder someone else from doing what they want. As for most of the battled social issues... those are for the majority to decide what is or isn't legislated into law. But what happens is the very voc

LInda... your Palin facts are 90% lies you have accepted because you read them somewhere, from somebody, like on this site. It was Tina Fey who made the "see Russia from my house." on SNL, Palin never said that. She was forced out of office by liberal loonies like you who would NOT allow her to do her job, facing numerous frivolous lawsuits over nothing. You force her out then blame her. that is so wrong.

Palin didn't win, McCain didn't die, so ease up a bit. If stupid women are bad for a party, then maybe you should leave the Dem party before yo give it a bad name.

If you want to demonize someone... you should personally check your facts first, and NOT rely on rumors and hearsay from people on this site. When you start making stuff up or repeating worn out lies, you lose respect and just sound ignorant.

David.. I love your perfect description of Democrats... "

Nothing matters to them but winning, and "the ends always justifies the means" (ie... torture, lying, manipulating facts, and denying facts)..

We don't have to wait for Obam, Pelosi, or Reid to open their mouth, or wait for another election cycle.

Democratic supporters are just wired differently, and they all have certain qualities that make them what they are...

Although it urks everyone else that they are constantly the best example of hypocracy as they are making their morally, and intellectually bankrupt statements (and actions), they each will always simply do or say whatever they think that they need to "to win"!
, morally bankrupt, "ends justification of whatever means necessary", etc, etc."

David... While I don't agree with vast generalizations of anything, especially groups of people, when you put it the way you did, I couldn't help but respond in kind. Both political parties carry a HUGE ego, and if you try to generalize the extremes of either party as the whole, then what you end up with is a political system that is corrupt, narcissistic, and in need of major reform. On that point, I think most everyone would agree.

Please, if you want to criticize... be specific and quit the offensive generalizations.. because it truly goes both ways.

I am so tired of slut-shaming women. Why do so many people feel they have the right to have an opinion on any woman's sexuality? Unless one has a monogamous relationship with a particular woman, only that woman's behavior is of one's concern. Please, STOP IT!! Women's bodies are not public or state property; we belong to ourselves. And ladies, WE must not engage in slut-shaming, or any other kind of oppression of women just because we agree with some stupid idea that controls women's sexuality.
