Bonamici, Cornilles Win Oregon Primary

10 comments Bonamici, Cornilles Win Oregon Primary

In an unsurprising finish, Democrat Suzanne Bonamici and Republican Ron Cornilles have won their respective primaries and will be facing off in a special election to replace Democratic Congressman David Wu in a special election on January 31st, 2012.

Both candidates went into today’s election with significant leads of over 30 points over their nearest competitors.  Despite a two week long “vote by mail” process, and the introduction of “iPad voting” for disabled residents, turnout for the primary is expected to be well under 50 percent, with only 29 percent of voters sending in ballots before election day.

Bonamici is being supported by national Democratic and pro-choice groups, including EMILY’s List, a group dedicated to helping women who support reproductive rights get into office. Cornilles ran unsuccessfully against Wu during the 2010 election, but is expected to continue trying to portray himself as a moderate during this cycle, despite running as a Tea Party candidate in the last cycle.

Wu was forced by his party to resign earlier this year after allegations of sexual misconduct.

Save it for the election.

Where are the comments going? Especially the ones about a box for a no confidence vote in the primaries? It might help people understand what's being said. Nobody should blindly accept an ideology, especially one that promotes mediocre politicians. I do wish that we had a Democrat president that didn't keep appeasing the Tea Party. I wish that we had someone that had a hint of FDR, Truman, JFK, or Clinton.
Our parties-politicians are out of touch with the average American. For many it's all show-no go--talk, but not take action. Our problems are horrible, but I believe that Obama could've shown more leadership-aback bone-especially with allowing the rich to keep tax benefits that they never had before George W. Bush took office. My money-all $5 of it is already was in a FCU. We have the right to demand high standards in our politicians.

First-what happened to the many other comments? There where many people that wished that ballots had a-no confidence- box to express the outrage that the candidates are unacceptable, so we can send a message to out-of-contact politicians and their parties. The implication was that this would be in the primaries. Elwood, don't lecture me about having a closed mind. When I went to the State Fair, I walked up to the state democrat booth and told them that they need to get a reasonable candidate-not sponsor someone that's barely escaped jail-and a state wide poll showed that only about 40% of democrats would vote him in as a dog catcher. This is notable since he was a mayor. In this economy he wanted to build an electric trolley at over a million dollars a mile on a route that already had 4 or 5 city busses running on it. It was to make the city look like San Francisco. As one local newscaster said, "maybe the poll showed that he's the most hated man in the state." The Democratic Party can only rise to lead, when we demand high standards. I have a right to say that I expect our politicians to have some of the standards that FDR, Truman, Kennedy, and Clinton displayed. I'm tired of the Democrats being wimps and push overs. I just don't think that the Tea Party would've lasted long if any of the above were in the oval office. A true liberal will demand that we don't follow blindly, but demand quality and a backbone to get needed programs through. My money has been in a FCU-the

Mary D, people like you are amazing in that you never seem to get it quite right as stated throughout your comment about from the days of Nixon through now which is close to 40 years later. Then you try to justify your conservative beliefs and actions by claiming to be a moderate Democrat, however Democrats don't need or appreciate the likes of cloaked narrow-mindedness clearly exhibited out of fear of sharing equal rights for all. There's no need to comment on your statements as they speak for themselves regarding your beliefs. Those like yourself who voted for Nixon and other "Repug" presidents since him have helped to lay design for all our country has suffered since while not even recognizing what you/they were being a party to. Hubert Humphrey's liberalism and Obama's youthful age had nothing to do with leading our country in a proper manner for the good of all citizens. Ironically, Nixon's paranoid fears lead to his demise so beware of what you fear because it only leads to more and intensified fears and there are those who rely and prey on those fears of so many citizens of this country to manifest their evil agendas. Love and compassion is the answer along with having an open mind that doesn't necessarily have to be liberal, just fair minded.

During the last presidential primary, I voted for John Edwards as a method of protest. He had already withdrawn from the presidential race.
Then we have judges running without opponents. Then NM wonders why judges have such low moral standards. This is small population state. Right now we have 2 judges with pending chares-rape for one and political graft-bribery going to him, when a young lawyer wanted 2 B considered for a judgeship. Then we have the usually alcoholic judges that are passed out along a hiway, etc. Yes-we need a way to say, "No way, Jose."
I thought that Obama was too young and inexperienced to be president-I think that he panders too much to the Tea party because of his inexperience-but there's no way that I'd vote for the Republicans of today- I'm a moderate Democrat-I voted for Nixon, even though I was moving Interstate because the Democrats were way to liberal-Hubert Humphrey scared me more than Nixon.

Low voter turnout has traditionally been a way for voters to say that they do not wish to vote for either candidate. But not voting just promotes democratic laziness, and that can become a habit after a while. I would like to see a box for each contest that specifically says I do not vote for either candidate. I can then vote to not vote in those contests. These are real votes of no confidence cast by engaged voters on the ballot, and can be counted. This would give both party's reason to take notice of their platforms
