Hundreds of kangaroos can breath easy now knowing that a proposed experiment that would have kept them in tiny cages has fallen through.
A PhD student at the University of Wollongong, New South Wales proposed a research study to measure the amount of methane gas that kangaroos expel. The study would have involved caging kangaroos in a 1m by 1.3m by 1.7m cage for up to nine months, even though a very similar study took place forty years ago. Read more about the research proposal here.
Though animal rights advocates were shocked by this abusive research study, the State Government approved funding and the university ethics committee was set to review this study within the month. This “shows that the structures and methods that the State Government’s ethics committees have in place are flawed and do not meet the requirements of animal welfare that the public expects,” Animal Liberation executive director Mark Pearson told The Illawarra Mercury.
Professor Steve Garlick, a specialist in kangaroo rehabilitation, told The Sydney Morning Herald that ”The result is that the animal will be highly stressed in its confinement and will be subject to a range of disease and illness which will make survival unlikely and the research project totally flawed.”
Thankfully, the student who proposed the research has decided to withdraw his study.
This is great news for the kangaroos and animal welfare advocates and we’d like to thank are Care2 members who took action by signing a petition against this research study.

Again a big hand for all who made this possible!!!
this just shows the government is payed to much if they are willing to use all their money on things that wont help the environment or anything else for that matter
That is helpful.
Thankfully, no Roos were harmed. I just can't believe what these so-called scientists do to waste our money and harm our greatest assets! And this is seriously cruel and pointless!
Thank God, thanks to all who have spoken up in the defense of animals.... they have rights too. lets keep the voices heard for animals.
My God, go to college, get a PHd so you can measure a Kangaroos farts. You are insane. Besides you, who gives a rats-ass. I guess just another excuse to torture an animal since they themselves can't say no. Cage your self and measure your own farts if it is that important to you. Please keep the results to yourself.
What kind of monster would even think of doing such a thing?
Thank Goodness for some good news where the animals triumph and don't have to face awful conditions and having some uncaring jerk poking and proding them and just making the animals' life a living HELL for the benefit of so called science. Studying farts !!!! There has got to be something better than that.
Why doesn't that "Ph.D." jackass do a study on the ignorance of the human race? What a STUPID idea to begin with? What the hell is wrong with people that they want to confine and torture animals and try and call it "studying"? Confine yourself, "student", and study where and why you came up with such an ignorant idea. DUMBASS!!!!
