Can Santorum Pull Off Another Win In Illinois?

Can Santorum Pull Off Another Win In Illinois?

Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney may have swept Puerto Rico, but frankly, it’s been quite some time since he’s won a state that was actually one of the continental 48.  He’s hoping to change that tomorrow in Illinois, while rival Rick Santorum is hoping to block him yet again.

A win in Illinois might be much more difficult for Santorum, though.  First, there’s the total imbalance on television advertising.  As The Fix points out, between Romney and his super PAC, Santorum has been vastly outspent in one of the most expensive media markets in the nation.  Then there were the lack of delegate slates in some counties, which in the end got fixed when it was discovered that Romney’s campaign had some issues that would disqualify them from getting delegates, too (both campaigns called a truce instead).

But Santorum is still relishing his underdog status.  He’s positioning himself as the state’s only viable chance to vote for a true conservative, since normally the GOP ends up putting more moderate Republicans in office so they have a chance at winning statewide. And he’s rallying local conservatives that this is a make or break moment — if he can win here, he’ll be able to secure the nomination by proving he is, in fact, more electable.  “This is a pledge,” the Caucus reports he told one crowd.  “If we’re able to come out of Illinois with a huge or surprise win, I guarantee you — I guarantee that we will win this nomination. We will nominate a conservative, and we will beat Barack Obama.”

Romney, meanwhile, is not taking anything for granted in this contest.  He and his wife Ann are focusing on a niche voter population they think could make their campaign — the women.   “You’ve got moms that are driving their kids to school and practice after school and other appointments and wonder how they can afford putting gasoline in the car, at the same time putting food on the table night after night…This president doesn’t understand the economy. He’s an economic lightweight, and he’s made decisions that have hurt the American people.”

With both candidates nearly tied in the polls, maybe the women will make the deciding vote between Romney and Santorum on Tuesday.

Not all stockbrokers and bankers are right-wing. In fact as they have access to enormous amounts of economic, social and financial litterature, some are very well informed. Whether they choose to help the needy or other social issues, is another thing.
High oil prices! This is going to be the big issue soon. Nobody to the left or right has any remedy for this. As left-wingers tend to be more flexible, they will adapt better to high gas prices. It's much easier for them to sell the car, ride a bike and use public transport.

Don't talk to Santorum about "pulling off" anything. It sounds too dirty.

A stockbroker I know said that very few could have pulled off the economic turnaround President Obama did. That anyone who says he made the recession worse doesn't know what they're talking about or lying. He doesn't think the Republican crew have a chance. This from a stockbroker???

Donald B. and others,

Be careful what you wish for and make darn certain
you cast your ballot this November. Remember the
last 'loser' president who could 'never' be elected was
in for two full terms, plunging the country into two
senseless unfunded wars, passing an unfunded
Medicare prescription drug boondoggle and more.

Obama may not have done what I had hoped but at least he has some job experience and seems to care about both men, women and the enviroment. These GOP clowns are some bible thumping idiots that only see the world through blinders and their pointly little heads. Obama, cut back on the lavish spending. We don't like the opulent parties and rickie rich lifestyle that politican think is their given right while using our monies. Get a clue. Do right by your fellow man.

We (Democrats) need Santorum to win Illinois to force this fiasco to keep going. The longer this goes, the farther to the right Mitt forces himself and the less time he has to move back to the middle to take on President Obama. Also he wastes additional capital that he won't have for the Fall.

Actually Gary S.,Santorum was voted out the Senate ,along with many other Republicans largely due to their Terry Sheivo stunt. For Pennsylvanians a last straw was probably Santorum's stupid "man on dog " remark. This race is too unpredictable for me to be willing to predict which of the two will win.But a close finish,if the delegates are rewarded proportionately, will increase the chances of a deadlocked GOP convention,in HOT HUMID Tampa. If that happens it could be fun viewing for this Liberal( the same way I'm sure Republicans had lots of fun in 1968 watching the Democrats' Convention in Chicago! ) !

Who cares none of them have a chance of winning unless they hack into the electronic voting machines. Uh oh....................

If this country is so far gone that we actually elect this religious zealot, we deserve what we get. His limited success has given us a look at what a certain segment of our society really wants and would like to see happen - that is, until the religion that ruled wasn't their "flavor" of Christianity - or maybe, not even Christianity at all. When seeking to take away the freedom of others (women, minorities, the disenfranchised) you will lose, too.
