Carelessness, Callousness, Chauvinism Create Worst Reactions to Shooting

  • 2 of 2

While ABC was careless in throwing out speculation, the folks at Breitbart were quite, quite sure that ABC was doing so in order to smear conservatives. Breitbart would show them, however. They’d link to a James Holmes who was registered as a Democrat! Okay, he was a different age than the James Holmes who attacked people in Aurora. Sure, he was registered to vote in La Plata County, which is six hours away from Aurora. Still, he was a Democrat! Take that, liberals!

Needless to say, Breitbart was no closer to the truth than ABC was; both picked a James Holmes at random, both reported a political affiliation for him, and both were completely wrong. But Breitbart’s breathless bombshell was spurred out of pure tribal animus. It would be far more embarrassing to the Breitbartkateers, but Breitbart is already known for having minimal journalistic ethics, so it won’t affect them in the long run.

Of all the responses, though, far and away the worst response of the day came from Celeb Boutique, which posted perhaps the most callous tweet since the Kenneth Cole debacle:

Yes, they did use the tragic murder of 12 people to sell Kim Kardashian’s new dress!

After about an hour and a trillion angry retweets, Celeb Boutique threw together a highly dubious apology. In a series of tweets, they said:

We didn’t check what the trend was about hence the confusion, again we do apologise[.] We are incredibly sorry for our tweet about Aurora – Our PR is NOT US based and had not checked the reason for the trend, at that time our social media was totally UNAWARE of the situation and simply thought it was another trending topic – we have removed the very insensitive tweet and will of course take more care in future to look into what we say in our tweets. Again we do apologise for any offense caused. This was not intentional & will not occur again. Our most sincere apologies for both the tweet and situation.

This explanation might work for people who are totally unfamilliar with Twitter, but people who are know that you can click on a hashtag to see what people are saying about it. Had anyone at Celeb Boutique bothered to check the #Aurora tag, they would have seen thousands of tweets about a shooting in Aurora.

Perhaps they’re telling the truth, and this was careless, not callous. But it bespeaks a certain level of narcissism to post an ad on any trending topic, without even bothering to check what it is. Maybe they didn’t set out to offend the entire internet, but their inability to realize that things trend for bad reasons as well as good shows just how little regard Celeb Boutique has for anyone.

You forgot another C- Christianity:

On Friday, July 20th 2012 at exactly 2:09 P.M. Pastor Rick Warren of the Saddleback Church tweeted:
“When students are taught they are no different from animals, they act like it.”

An evangelical spokesperson for a religious group known as Truth In Action has claimed that the tragedy in Colorado happened because America has lost its fear of hell.

In an article published on OneNewsNow, evangelical Jerry Newcombe wrote:
I can't help but feel that to some extent, we're reaping what we've been sowing as a society. We said to God, "Get out of the public arena." Lawsuit after lawsuit, often by misguided "civil libertarians," have chased away any fear of God in the land -- at least in the hearts of millions.

Newcombe is not alone in reacting this way to the shooting in Aurora that claimed 12 deaths and left dozens of people injured. On the day of the shooting Rep. Gohmert of Texas also insisted that the shootings are the result of "ongoing attacks on Judeo-Christian Beliefs":

I run a blog on all things pop culture. Comics, games, movies etc. I had blogged about The Dark Knight Rises, the movie that was playing when the gunman attacked.
I was going to do a further blog about the Nolan/ Batman Trilogy but when I read about the shootings, out of respect for the victims, I chose not to. To use this tragedy to point fingers, or sell dresses or whatever is sick and show an increasing disregard for human life.

I am not the only NRA member that thinks it is wrong to kill for sport. The NRA represents a wide variety of American gun owners. Many of us have guns for self protection (It is a well known fact that the police in this country can't protect everyone properly because they can't arrive in time in most areas of the country), for target shooting, and because we collect them. The NRA also protects the rights of LAW ABIDING citizens to own firearms.
Their leadership and some of their membership may be embarrassing at times, but too powerful or dangerous they are not. They do protect my Second Amendment rights to own firearms as a law abiding citizen. I own every one of the weapons the shooter used and would never think of doing what he did. But a bad apple gives all gun owners a bad rap.
In a time when we should be thinking of the victims of this shooting, too many people are using it as a soap box to place blame and for partisan politics.

Actually this "news" from both ABC and Breitbart is about as clear a summary of the state of the "news" as we can get: no one checks facts, they just regurgitate whatever crap they ingest. There are very few news sources that are at all reliable - Bill Moyers & Company is a good show, and there are some good investigative reporters online. Rachel Maddow is upfront about her viewpoint but she checks facts thoroughly and cares about the truth.

The victims and their families have suffered a terrible loss and we need to hold them in our thoughts and prayers.
