October 16 was National Feral Cat Day. To honor the event, the Heaven Can Wait Animal Society in Las Vegas, NV “fixed” 405 feral cats and kittens during a weekend spay-a-thon.
The event, which also commemorated the 10th anniversary of the animal welfare group’s Trap-Neuter-Return program was a cooperative effort between C5 (Community Cat Coalition of Clark County), the Las Vegas Valley Humane Society and Heaven Can Wait. The goal was to spay and neuter 400 feral cats and kittens in a 48 hour period.
The spay-a-thon took an army of volunteers, veterinarians, vet-techs and trappers to coordinate and carry out the massive project and safely return the cats to their colonies all over the city. The group began at 6a.m. and worked through midnight each day.
“Alley Cat Allies launched National Feral Cat Day in 2001 to raise awareness about feral cats, promote Trap-Neuter-Return, and recognize the millions of compassionate citizens who care about cats. On National Feral Cat Day and all year round, people all across the country work to draw attention to the cause and press their local leaders for humane policies for feral cats,” said Becky Robinson president of Alley Cat Allies.
Feral cats are the wild offspring of domestic housecats that were abandoned or lost. They can become wild in just one generation.
“Eleven years ago TNR was not a household term and people didn’t understand that feral cats were the offspring of stray cats. So we decided to create a special day that would make the public aware that feral cats live and thrive in every landscape,” said Robinson.
Heaven Can Wait Animal Society holds a feral cat spay and neuter clinic once a month. They have fixed more than 65,000 animals in the past 10 years.

wonderful story - hope some of them were not too feral and taken in as pets to get off the street.
Feral cats murder over 40 millions innocent songbirds each year, not to mention millions of cute baby squirrels, rabbits, flying squirrels, and so many others. As a wildlife rehabilitator, I'm tired of having dozens of innocent babies die in my hands every year covered with infected cat bites and blood. Shame on you arrogant single-species "lovers of living things" who only see killer cats, not the dozens of innocent victims of these murdering felines. Shame, shame, shame.
Mari S - yes! Imagine if cities all over would do this, just think of how many cats would be saved from slaughter because they're unwanted and homeless. Thank you, too, for what you do.
This is such an uplifting story. What an accomplishment!
Thank you so much, Heaven Can Wait. Thank you for caring.
great event! thanks for sharing :)
what a great event....
I just had a new stray show up at more door tonight. Whether the cat is male or female, pregnant or not, feral, lost or an unwanted pet I'm unsure. He was meowing at my door wanting in as the temperatures have dipped and snow flurries were falling. I'm sure he wants some shelter and food yet seems skittish around people.
Of course with a house already full of pets it's not as easy as just letting him in. I'm not sure of his temperment or if he's carrying any diseases
The people that do these TNR progams are angels and I thank them
That kitten is awake!... I hope (assume?) that they are anesthetized sufficiently as to feel no pain!
Great ideas I too hope other communities will follow.
~Way to go, great job!~Other communities should follow in your footsteps!~
