Oklahoma State Senator Constance Johnson (D-Forrest Park) was the force behind the “every sperm is sacred” amendment to the Personhood Act is making the point yet again that attacks on women’s health has to stop.
Johnson’s newest amendment is attached to SB1274 a bill that would force a woman to hear the heartbeat of her unborn fetus before she can get an abortion. The amendment bans vasectomies unless the vasectomy is intended to “avert the death of the man or avert serious risk of substantial and irreversible physical impairment of a major bodily function of the man.”
Jonhson and her female colleagues across the country have been left with no other choice than to bring amendment after amendment to call out the ridiculous assault on women’s health.
In Georgia, eight of the nine female senators walked out in protest over the attacks on women’s right. The protest came after the Senate passed restrictions on insurance coverage for abortions and contraceptives.
In Washington, twelve female Senators, led by Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA) sent a letter to Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-OH) demanding he drop his promise to hold a vote on the House version of the Blunt Amendment. That version has over 200 Republican co-sponsors and Boehner had vowed to bring it to the floor.
It’s encouraging to see this kind of upswell of resistance but what it really does is underscore the fact that to end this assault we need to elect more pro-choice women.
