Charlotte North Carolina edged out Minneapolis, St. Louis and Cleveland as the choice for Democrats to hold their 2012 national convention. The event is scheduled for the week of September 3rd and has been named the “People’s Convention.”
First Lady Michelle Obama, in an e-mail to party activists, called Charlotte “a city marked by its southern charm, warm hospitality, and an ‘up by the bootstraps’ mentality that has propelled the city forward as one of the fastest-growing in the South.
The decision could signify the importance of the state in the upcoming election. President Obama carried North Carolina in 2008 by a slim margin, becoming the first Democratic candidate to do so since Jimmy Carter in 1976. But the state swung back toward Republicans in the 2010 midterm.
Republicans will hold their convention in Tampa, Florida.

+ add your ownLen F. Your point would mean alot more if you knew something. Charlotte is "hosting" the DEMOCRATIC convention, not the GOP.
I think this is a kick in the teeth to the Democrats' liberal base, and is a feeble attempt to garner more right-wing support.
Congratulations to Charlotte, I hope it increases their revenues.
I beg to differ. Charlotte is NOT going to hold the GOP convention. They are going to host it. The GOP is going to have the convention.
it's not going to matter unless the Democrats grow a set and start standing up for what's right. They will lose to the Republicans and we will be forced to live under another Bush who BTW had a large hand in our financial "problems". funny how no one sees that both sides need to get a grip on reality and SEE what's really happening to the people of this country.
It's sad our political process wastes so much money and we still have no choice. We only have the illusion of democracy. AND BOTH SIDES ARE CORRUPT. We need election reform TODAY.
@William R., maybe because they did not increase the national debt by $8T. When Bush went into office the National Debt was $6T and when he left it was $10.2T which included the $800B for TARP which your buddy Obama voted for and over half of which had not been spent.
If Bush lied about WMD so did Hilary and most of the Senate and House. We know that Saddam had WMD because he used them on his own people; whether he got rid of them or not is anyone's guess.
Congrats Charollett!! Would of rather seen it in MPLs, but HAAPY reguardless!! GO OBAMA & DEMOCRATS!!
Think Philadelphia! Very strong Democratic & Obama atmosphers, and Pennsylvania Convention Center relatively new, and beautiful!!
Liberty Bell & first Continental Congress. Declaration of Independence, U.S. Constitution, & Bill of Rights written.
Not far away, Allentown, PA, has state-of-art airport, great places to stay, and regular bus service daily to Convention Center.
Joe V I didn't hear anyone squawking when Bush-Cheney add 8 trillion dollars to our national debt. After giving all the money in the treasury to his rich friends. Then they put us in an illegal war with thier lies of WMDs. Guess you weren't around for that. Don't know what kind of politicans you have in SC but the people I met down there were really nice and smart too.
This is wonderful news for the region! WNC LOVES Obama!
