Could Our Wild Horses and Burros See a Victory?

21 comments Could Our Wild Horses and Burros See a Victory?

The Restoring Our American Mustangs (ROAM) Act, (HR 1018), introduced by U.S. Representatives Rahall and Grijalva, passed in the House of Representatives late last week.

The Act is meant to restore the protections for our wild horses and burros that were stealthily removed from the Wild-Free Roaming Horses and Burros Act of 1971 by by Sen Conrad Burns (R-MT) , along with restoring about 20 million acres that were taken away from them. Additionally, it will add new protections including a ban on helicopter round-ups.

Over 6 million cattle are being grazed on this land, and there’s not enough to support some 30,000 wild horses that are left there. As I said before, it appears the Bureau of Land Management would rather continue to ignore democracy and cave to special interests while wasting millions rounding up horses and keeping them crammed into holding pens to wait for slaughter instead of actually implementing a real “management” plan that’s genetically, ethically or fiscally responsible.

Opponents of the Act argue that this is a waste of time, considering the current state of the economy. However, the BLM’s already wasting about $27 million a year, and they want more to continue rounding up horses to keep in federal holding facilities. Shouldn’t our politicians be able to deal with more than one issue at a time?

The Act still has to pass the Senate vote before it can be signed by President Obama.

You can also continue to support Madeleine Pickens efforts to purchase land and remove horses from federal holding facilities

David B - you keep speaking out about things like this! Don't worry about your spelling, just keep that passion going because that's what turns the tide on situations like this one. I agree with the idea that we're so bogged down with red tape when it comes to the animals in every area of the country - but it's amazing how other things that are harmful to them seem to sail right through legislation. Even our president is up against this sort of stonewalling in his efforts to get things changed from "how it's always been" in government. We need to take responsibility for our own laziness in allowing our elected officials to be re-elected session after session and start finding new people to take office who will truly represent the people - not themselves once they're in and settled. The spirit of those horses reflects the spirit of all the people who fight tirelessly year after year to save them and keep them safe - and pull the covers on who really profits from them being moved off the land and slaughtered. New day coming! Don't ever give up - we CAN do it. LOL

The BLM needs to stop caving in to the cattle ranchers who keep demanding more land. We, the citizens of the US, not the ranchers own that land & those horses & burros belong to us. How much, if anything, are the ranchers paying the BLM to graze their cattle on our land? If they are paying anything, where is the money going? If they aren't paying anything, why not? The horses & burros were on that land long before the cattle ranches were, so why do the ranchers get to decide what happens to them? Maybe we should start rounding up the ranchers & penning them up in holding pens.

well,i don't know why i start my day here everyday, but i do!!i guess i just like to see how greatly i can furstrate myself !it's a crime and it still continues, against nature and our fellow animals.why is it when something bad is put into law it moves so fast?when it's something good trying to fix it it takes forever?and why is it allowed that ranchers can feed out of the american taxpayer trough, yet one of mother nature's greatest gifts to man if baned from such??and i can think of no way to put this nicely,so,what have the previous administration done that's positive?they slughter the horse, chaned the laws protecting it from happening and did the same with,ok sorry was just about to go off topic!! it's a sad comentairy on us as supposidily being the "most intelligent" species on the planet that we are also the most destructive, especially toward out felloe animalks ! sorry if this turned into a rant!!be well all!!

A bit of GOOD news, a bill was passed Friday, in congress BANNING the BLM from killing up to 30,000 wild mustangs! Now if we could just plain BAN the BLM!! And if the Ranchers can not run SELF SUFFICIENT ranches they should be FINED for letting their cattle graze on OUR land!!!
