Cute Animal Video of the Day: American Pika Lets Out Almighty Meep

American pikas communicate over vast distances with an adorable and distinctive squeak. They usually cry out to warn other pikas about predators, but they also display a wider variety of vocalizations during mating seasons. These particular pikas reside in Kokanee Glacier Provincial Park, British Columbia.

Some of the footage from this clip made its way into an episode of Daily Planet on Discovery Channel Canada this past October – take a look and see if the first pika’s meep takes you by surprise:
