Actress Cynthia Nixon married her longterm partner Christine Marinoni on Sunday in the state of New York, it has been announced.
Three years on from getting engaged at a rally for marriage equality, when same-sex marriage was not legal in the state, the couple are now said to have tied the knot.
“On May 27, 2012, Cynthia Nixon and her girlfriend, Christine Marinoni, were legally married in the state of New York,” her rep tells PEOPLE in a statement. “Nixon wore a custom dress by Carolina Herrera.”
No other details were immediately available.
New Hampshire’s Bishop Gene Robinson was rumoured to be officiating, though this has not been confirmed.
Nixon, 46, and Marinoni, 45, have been together since 2004. The couple are raising three children together, two from Nixon’s previous long-term relationship, and Max Ellington Nixon-Marinoni whom Marioni gave birth to in 2011.
Marriage equality was legalized in New York with bipartisan support in 2011, much to the consternation of religious right groups who still are today trying to challenge the procedural motions used to bring the marriage equality bill to a vote. The outcome of that case, which is set to proceed to trial in the next few months, is not expected to see the New York law blocked however.
