Daily Cute: Rescued Echidna Puggle

Daily Cute: Rescued Echidna Puggle

Editor’s Note: This post is a Care2 favorite, back by popular demand. It was originally posted on July 17, 2013. Enjoy!

This cute little creature is Beau the echidna, an egg-laying mammal and relative of the platypus. Beau was found on a walking trail at the young age of 30 days. Caretakers at the Taronga Zoo in Sydney think Beau fell out of its mother’s pouch, because babies are kept in the pouch for up to 50 days, after which the mother keeps them in a burrow for another two months or so.

This is what an adult echidna looks like:

Glennis W: the echidna and the platypus are both monotremes (egg laying mammals).
Barbara S: No, echidnas are not related to porcupines (but they do both have spines).

So wonderful to see a puggle! Yes, Corey B and all - echidnas are awesome!
