Dairy Industry Launches New Misleading Campaign

I bet you didn’t know that the dairy industry is failing. That’s right. In fact, sales are down by a whopping 33 percent since just 1970. In response to their diminishing profits, this big business has launched a new campaign to try and change public opinion. The new marketing will not just try and persuade people to drink more cow’s milk, it will also poke fun at and even question the credibility and health claims of vegan milk. Here are some examples of the propaganda that the dairy industry is hurling at the public and how they will be doing it:

  • Orchestrated by the Milk Processor Education Program, which is a trade group in the dairy industry, this new campaign is called the “Get Real” initiative. This scheme will try and combat the decrease in cow’s milk consumption and sales, while attempting to overturn the growing skeptism behind the industry.
  • The dairy industry will be using Facebook, Twitter and other social media outlets to post pro-milk campaigns that send a positive message about cow secretion and criticize vegan milk in various ways.
  • The dairy industry is making claims that non-dairy milks, like almond, are inferior to cow’s milk, and will be using trickery to “prove” so.

As far as health benefits are concerned, when comparing the array of vegan milks to cow’s milk, the gains are undeniable. Depending on what non-dairy milk that you choose, you can expect higher calcium content, enrichment of key vitamins and minerals, omega fatty acids, protein and more. Not to mention vegan milks offer many choices, including a variety of flavors and calorie contents, to suit your individual dietary needs.

Non-dairy milk also comes sans scary ingredients. It is common knowledge that some pretty nasty additives have been found in dairy milk. A certain level of blood, pus, antibiotics, chemicals, pesticides and other unwanted ingredients are commonly found in dairy products. Much to many dairy drinkers’ surprise is that the FDA frequently issues citations against dairy farms for illegal levels of medications, such as antibiotics and pain relievers, found in the product. Government testing reveals that the milk is contaminated, but it is sourced from suffering, battered animals in deplorable conditions, so is it really that surprising?

If all of the negative health impacts of the dairy industry are not enough for the masses to avoid it, there is one compelling video that has been circulating online, posted by an anti-dairy organization called The Bloody Dairy Industry that will imaginably change minds in its brief 17 seconds.

The video shows a cow who just had her baby, the umbilical cord still visibly attached, and as a dairy farmer proceeds to take her newborn literally away from her, a friend of the mother cow springs into action and attacks the worker. Although the protective cow is not the calf’s mother, she is a mama who had all of her babies stolen by this farmer in the past. The mother cow, who was likely sore and in pain from just giving birth, does show up at 0:08 to assist in the attacking. A third cow, who did not witness the incident, comes over after hearing the distress calls. At 0:14, all of the cows check to see if the baby is okay by sniffing the baby. This is done “in order to detect possible biochemical changes in the baby’s body that would occur as a result of internal or external injury and produce a change in the baby’s body odor (mother cow is the first to sniff the baby). Nose is one of the most sensitive body parts of a cow, and cattle’s remarkably keen sense of smell enables them to smell something even 5-6 miles away.” All of this demonstrates the complex emotional, physical and social system of cows, who in most cases are shackled up by the dairy industry in dark concrete warehouses. The outdoor setting in this video is rare and atypical.

However, if the dairy industry thinks that inflicting various levels of emotional and physical distress on living beings is better than milking an almond, we are certain that the free thinking public will remain in disagreement.

Besides, this campaign is vastly deceiving. What numbers are the dairy industry using to compare the nutritional value of vegan milks with cow’s milk? Are they looking at a light almond milk that is not enriched and is mainly aimed at dieters and then comparing it to whole cow’s milk? That would be like measuring an apple against an orange. If you nutritionally compare the common soy milk to 1 percent cow’s milk, which is more equitable, the milk of the bean wins hands down. With so many other vegan milks on the market today (e.g., almond, hazelnut, sunflower, coconut, rice, oat, hemp, cashew and others), it is difficult to believe that animal abuse is the more viable option. Many vegan milks are far superior to cow’s milk, so dairy is not playing fair. They are misleading the public with this publicity stunt.

Will people believe them or will dairy sales continue to be creamed by the growing health food industry?

What the hell is wrong with Care2 and why is it posting other people's comments with my screen name? This is a HORRIBLE glitch and needs to be fixed. Is Care2 attempting to destroy itself?
