Dispatches From The War On Women: Congress Just Doesn’t Get It

Welcome to Dispatches, your round-up of the latest news from the frontlines of the War on Women. Have a story from your state or an idea on how to push back? Share them here and fight back against the War on Women.

It’s hard to think of a day in recent memory that more succinctly sums up Republican attitudes towards “helping” women than the votes that went down in Congress Thursday. To start there was the vote on the deceptively-named and flagrantly offensive Prenatal Nondiscrimination Act. Republicans paraded PRENDA as a beacon of their embrace of civil rights, their deep-concern for the well-being of unborn baby girls, and their sincere desire to see women of color not discriminated against in accessing health care. Seriously.

Then there is the Paycheck Fairness Act. Despite support in the Senate, and earlier passage in the House, Republicans blocked a vote on the bill today. Like the beleaguered Violence Against Women Act, the only real reason there’s opposition to the Paycheck Fairness Act is because the Republican majority in Congress is opposed to any measure that, at its spirit, embraces the idea that women are full and equal participants in this economy and in this democracy.

How can Republicans think any of that is a good electoral strategy when one-third of American women believe there is a wide-scale war on women afoot?

In case the picture isn’t quite clear, Florida offers us another good example of Republican opposition to women exercising their civil rights. The state enacted a stringent voter id and registration law and other “reform” measures including voter purges. Thankfully a federal judge has stepped in to put a halt to some of the state’s worst reforms as has the Department of Justice.

While we are asking questions, why aren’t women using more effective birth control?

Yesterday marked the third anniversary of the murder of Dr. George Tiller. The memorials, activism and advocacy around the occasion was a fitting tribute. Keeping them going every day forward would be more so.

Military moms get photographed breastfeeding in uniform and the right goes bananas.

Rebecca Traister brilliantly explores why single women terrify some.

Good news from Boston where a unanimous First Circuit Court of Appeals held a key provision of the Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional. Hooray! Supreme Court review is all but a given. In the meantime, lets celebrate this moment while we can.

It’s the final weekend before the Wisconsin recall election. Let’s keep the pressure on and vote Walker out!

Thanks for checking back and don’t forget to send in your stories, suggestions and comments. We’ll be back each weekday with the latest in the best and the worst from the War on Women. So long as the battle rages, we’ll cover the latest, so please check back!

Information for someone who can apprehend a sentence longer than 5 words. Rocco S. is not included:

One of President Barack Obama’s top campaign spokesmen is a private equity manager whose firm has shut down several factories and laid off hundreds of people amid a stalled economy.

Federico Pena’s role at Vestar Capital Partners has emerged as Obama’s aides and deputies continue their effort to portray former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney‘s investment career as ruthless, job-destroying, profit-maximizing “vulture capitalism.” Pena has been a partner at Vestar since 2000. ...

Pena has already contributed $5,000 to Obama’s campaign, even though Vestar laid off 1,000 workers from Del Monte this month, closed three factories and laid off 540 people at Solo Cup Co., and fired another 500 workers at BirdsEye food-processor in 2006, according to the report.

He never talks about poverty in America. 1 out of 5 or is it 4 now kids go to bed without enough food in their tummies. Obama ... when has he EVER seriously addressed that? Jimmy Fallon's show? Michelle on the View? I don't think so.

Just because you think that Romney is a jerk, it doesn't mean that Obama isn't one also .. .and much much worse. Since Romney is not yet at the helm to wreak his evil. Obama has been wreaking his since the get go.

So, Romney is a jerk. Obama is a murderer, a mass murderer, and a front man for corporatists ruining our economy and turning us into a third world nation. Obama is the 1 percenter in chief. Lesser of 2 evils? Glen Ford of Black Agenda Report declares Obama is the more effective of two evils.

Voting for Obama? You are enabling someone who will continue to hurt our country and the citizenry. He is committed to doing that, he will do it with a smile and shining words.

Democracy in action? Supporting Obama? The right to help a war criminal and a constitution shredder?

Team Obama sure has a good PR program. Lots of money for propaganda and a lot of people ready to lap even more of it up apparently.

Instead he organizes a jobs committee filled with exploiting fat cats who ensure that everything is trickle up from the taxpayers to them. Obama and the corporate crony Dems are pimped out by these people. It is not that there is no money around. It is just that the backstabbing representatives in government on both sides of the aisles have given and are still giving it to the bastards that are contributing to the representatives continued jobs as pimped out betrayers.

Obama has robbed citizens of their right of due process. No trial. WTF? Why are so few APPALLED at this???? HELLLOOOOO???? No innocent until proven guilty in Obamaworld.

If Obama puts an American citizen on a kill list, Obama declares and a wimpy Congress is doing nothing to stop him or SCOTUS, that that individual will be killed according to Obama's will. What happened to the three branches of our government? What happened to you are innocent until PROVEN guilty.

If Obama wants to have you disappeared forever, throw you in a detention facility citing you are a threat in this blank check for sociopaths War on Terror, so be it.

What happened to closing Gitmo? What happened to ending the wars which was his platform in 2008. Now his platform is as KILL LIST WAR CRIMINAL IN CHIEF! Macho time?

Some memory hole America.

Obama never talks about the plight of the homeless. He never talks about poverty in America. 1 out of 5 or is it 4 now kids go to bed without enough food in their tummi

Obama has a really nice smile. A nice personality. Character? No. You don't have character when you don't care about and engineer mass deaths. When you drone innocent people and then lie about it. When you pretend to care about people and you do the opposite. When you shred our constitution.

Obama is like those pretty LOOKING commercials that show people strolling in meadows and the narration is talking about suicide and projectile vomiting. My advice, listen to the narrative. Don't buy the smile and the benign branding of Obama. Don't believe and trust that Obama and his regime are seriously interested in social justice and empathy.

When you lie to people and say you want to help them get jobs and homes and food and then you really help the people who are destroying the people you are pretending to care about that is craven and amoral. LIES. LIES. LIES. Election time. Time for Lucy and the football, America. Another game with Barack. This time Obama will do his job effectively. Really? And why is that? Let's give him another Nobel Peace Prize, shall we? How many wars has he got going now? 6?

He is authorizing wars for corporate agendas. He is cronied up with corporatists and talks out of both sides of his mouth. He could have with one executive order done so much to launch a jobs program in this country and he did not. Instead he organizes a jobs committee filled with exploiting fat cats who ensure that everything is trickle up from the taxpayers to them

Rocco S., you really are dying for me to start a conversation with you. I told you, I won't. Not interested. The only thing I can tell you: KISS MY ASS! JUST KISS IT!

Lis G., I seriously don't understand you and others cheering on Obama.

Obama is violating international law. He is authorizing drone killings of innocent civilians and covering them up. He is ignoring the plight of troops who are suffering trauma, even to the point of killing themselves. No biggie to our Obama, more military suicides in the US than non-military suicides. HE DOES NOT CARE. Doesn't care at all!

Do you? Do you care about what our troops are going through, really????? Or the innocent civilians being killed in these bloodbath wars that NATO and the US claims are humanitarian???? Do you believe that? Do you care about that, human beings who aren't Americans but they are human beings DYING BRUTALLY????

Obama's enemies are the whistleblowers who tell the truth as to how evil things are with our military and our corporate cronyism. Obama can't shut those people up fast enough. But he really doesn't have to, because apparently so many people are willing to stick their heads in the sand or live in the fog of denial and minimization and they have a really craven faux-progressive media to tell them everything will be fine as long as Obama is re-elected. Bullshit.

Obama has a really nice smile. A nice personality. Character? No. You don't have character when you don't care about and engin
