Dispatches From The War On Women: Our Schools Need Our Help

Welcome to Dispatches, your round-up of the latest news from the frontlines of the War on Women. Have a story from your state or an idea on how to push back? Share them here and fight back against the War on Women.

It may still be summer, but the school year is right around the corner, which means now is a good time to focus a bit on the health of our educational environment since that environment is an immediate reflection of our priorities, and our morals, as a nation. As far as the health of our students, 88 percent of high school students have access to sugary drinks on campus. Add in an increasingly sedentary curriculum and it is no wonder diabetes and obesity are off the charts.

Meanwhile, our learning objectives may be falling short. Take this example. The purpose of an environmentally-focused education is strengthen the bonds and commitment we have to our natural world. But is it having the opposite effect?

If it seems like summer vacation is shorter and shorter every year, maybe that’s because it is. Schools are adding learning time in their calendars, bumping school years up to 200 days.

It’s not just school that is around the corner. With less than 100 days till the election, take a look at this handy interactive map detailing voter suppression efforts state-by-state.

Now this is a story with some potential: here are Mitt Romney’s three biggest lies–of the week.

Will Ferrell and Zack Galifianakis have a new political comedy out but the Koch brothers sure aren’t laughing. Maybe that’s because the IRS seems intent on taking a look at their super-PAC activity.

Anti-choice activists are re-thinking their strategy of using primarily white men to do their politicking and are now recruiting radical right wing immigrant women to take up their cause.

There’s only one of two possible right answers here: either Texas Governor Rick Perry is really a total buffoon, or he’s a cynical, self-serving politician.

Young women may be able to stay on their parents insurance until they are 26 thanks to Obamacare, but that doesn’t mean the insurance company has to cover the cost of their pregnancies.

Judy Molland offers this really nice piece on Maeve Binchy and asks whether a childless woman author can create good mom characters.

Hate runs so deep and so hot that this Denver baker would rather shut down before making a gay wedding cake.

Police in Washington tasered and jailed this deaf woman AFTER she called officers for help because she was being assaulted in her home.

Go ahead, TRY not to get this tune stuck in your head.

Thanks for checking back and don’t forget to send in your stories, suggestions and comments. We’ll be back each weekday with the latest in the best and the worst from the War on Women. So long as the battle rages, we’ll cover the latest, so please check back!

We have increased loopholes allowing corporations to ship trillions of dollars into offshore accounts evading taxes. Demonize unions. Remove all safety nets. Ship all possible jobs overseas. That is how we become a better country?

SLL - That is a pretty broad statement. My grandchildren attended a catholic school in a suburb of Chicago. A few years later they moved to another suburb and attended public schools. The public schools where they attend are far superior to the catholic school they attended. It was a great move for them. Private does not mean better.

No child left behind is a joke. now every public school student is left behind the rest of the advancing world. The regressive policies of the BUSH ERA financed illegal wars and invasions and neglected public education. High school students in the US today are far behind in Math and Science that many developing nations with progressive countries. The GOP only care about private schools and profit from the education business.

Good parenting, role models and a parents interest in their child's education is tantamount. Hmmm, it is called the PTA!

That last sentence I wrote confused even me. LOL I should have stated that removing vending machines in schools will do little to curb obesity or diabetes.

Kevin B said,"Lots of things to get upset about but the fact that 88% of schools have a coke or pepsi machine on campus hardly seems like one of them. That being said, when I was in school there were no vending machines on campus and we did just fine." Right on Kevin. We also got along without carpeting and AC. A sugary drink at school is not going to cause rampant diabetes in students. Good nutrition is very important, but to think removing vending machines at schools will do little to curb obesity and diabetes is pretty short sighted. Surely, there are more relevant topics.
