Eco-Friendly Milk Goes On Sale In The UK

62 comments Eco-Friendly Milk Goes On Sale In The UK

A new eco-friendly milk bottle will soon be going on sale in supermarkets throughout the UK.

According the The Daily Mail, Martin Mysercough invented the so-called GreenBottle after he saw the impact that plastic milk bottles were having on his local landfill.

From The Daily Mail:

The bottles, which comprises of an outer shell made from recycled paper and a thin plastic liner to store the milk, will be rolled out across all Asda stores after a successful pilot scheme.

The revolutionary outer shell of the green cartons, which look similar to a normal plastic milk bottle, can be recycles again or thrown away and will decompose in a matter of weeks.

The average plastic bottle takes around 500 years to decompose and 15 million bottles are used every day according to The Guardian.

(By clicking on The Daily Mail link, you can see a photo of the GreenBottle, as well as an illustration of how it is made.)

Apparently, an independent lifecycle analysis of the GreenBottle found it had a carbon footprint 48 percent lower than that of a standard milk container.

The Daily Mail labels this invention a “revolutionary milk bottle,” since it is made out of recycled paper.

My question is “What happened to glass bottles?” Growing up in England, at a time when milk was delivered daily to my front door, I used to put out the empty glass bottles every day. After cleaning, these were immediately ready for to be re-filled.

Recycling is great when necessary, but it is often a very energy-intensive process, and in this case seems unnecessary.

What do you think?

to make the process even more humane and green they just need to take cows out of the process. the only purpose of cow's milk anyway is to make baby cows grow fat fast. if you are old enough to be out of diapers you are old enough to stop drinking milk. but if you feel you must, at least stick to milk from your own species.

Any improvement is good. And this is eco-friendly. However, the 'manufacture' of milk is enough to turn my stomach.

I like the idea of eco friendly contaniers. As for the vegans complaining not everyone is going to give up milk so push to make the milk process more humane.

I got excited at the title. I have been looking for milk in Australia that has no nasty hormones or antibiotics and is ethically friendly as well. Am I dreaming or is this possible without having a hooby farmer live next door?

Great idea! Very good that the government is stepping in and doing things right. Once again, the US is behind on the environment.
