Five Conspiracy Theories 2016 Hopeful Ted Cruz Actually Believes

Five Conspiracy Theories 2016 Hopeful Ted Cruz Actually Believes

Written by Ian Millhiser

On Wednesday morning, the National Review broke the news that tea party Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) is considering a presidential run, a scoop that should surprise no one who’s paid attention to his short Senate career. As Jonathan Bernstein explains, Cruz has spent his few months in the Senate alienating his colleagues by constantly trying to distinguish himself as the more-conservative-than-thou alternative to “establishment” Republicans. Such behavior makes no sense if Cruz is interested in building the coalitions necessary to legislate, but it makes perfect sense if he has his eyes set on winning a tea-soaked GOP primary in 2016.

If Cruz runs, he would give voice to the conspiracy-minded, John Birch Society wing of the Republican Party that the National Review’s founder fought so hard to purge several decades ago. Cruz is the Glenn Beck of the United States Senate, promoting new conspiracy theories just as easily as Mr. Beck adds new names to his chalkboard. Here are five examples of such theories that Cruz actually believes in:

  • George Soros leads a global conspiracy to abolish the game of golf. In a January 2012 article published on Cruz’s senate campaign website, the future senator argues that a twenty year-old non-binding United Nations resolution signed by 178 nations including the United States under President George H.W. Bush, is actually a nefarious plot to “abolish ‘unsustainable’ environments, including golf courses, grazing pastures, and paved roads.” Cruz attributes this plot to a common tea party boogieman — “[t]he originator of this grand scheme is George Soros, who candidly supports socialism and believes that global development must progress through eliminating national sovereignty and private property.”
  • Communists infiltrated Harvard Law School. Almost three years ago, Cruz gave a speech to the tea party group Americans for Prosperity in which he claimed that revolutionary communists were a major presence on Harvard’s law faculty. According to Cruz, “There were fewer declared Republicans in the faculty when we were there than Communists! There was one Republican. But there were twelve who would say they were Marxists who believed in the Communists overthrowing the United States government.” Cruz’s claims came as a big surprise to Harvard Law Professor Charles Fried, a Republican who served as President Reagan’s solicitor general, who says that “I would be surprised if there were any members of the faculty who ‘believed in the Communists overthrowing the U.S. government.’”
  • Islamic law threatens the United States. Echoing a common fear among very conservative politicians that Sharia law is somehow creeping into American life, Cruz told a senate candidate’s forum last year that “Sharia law is an enormous problem” in the United States. In reality, there are barely any examples of Islamic or Sharia law even being mentioned in American legal proceedings, and when it is mentioned it is typically because a contract, will or other document drafted by a private citizen invokes Sharia law, not because the court wishes to replace American law with something else.
  • Obama wants the immigration bill to fail so he can campaign on it in 2016. Cruz claims that “the reason that the White House is insisting on a path to citizenship” in the immigration bill making its way through Congress “is because the White House knows that insisting on that is very likely to scuttle the bill” giving Obama an issue to campaign on in 2014 and 2016. In reality, a path to citizenship was a key prong of the immigration bill President Bush supported in 2007. It’s also a major prong of the Gang of Eight bill — a gang which includes Republican Sens. John McCain (R-AZ), Marco Rubio (R-FL), Lindsay Graham (R-SC) and Jeff Flake (R-AZ). So if the path to citizenship is actually an Obama plot to give himself a campaign issue, Obama has some unexpected co-conspirators in this scheme.
  • George W. Bush led an assault on Texas’ “sovereignty.” Cruz’s first campaign ad touted his victory in a Supreme Court case permitting the state of Texas to execute a Mexican national, despite the fact that Texas violated America’s treaty obligations by not permitting this Mexican citizen “to request assistance from the consul of his own state.” President Bush objected to Texas’s effort to flout a treaty that even North Korea had honored when it detained two American journalists for five months in 2009. Cruz dismissed Bush’s objections as an intrusion on “the sovereignty of the States.”
  • If elected to the White House, Cruz is unlikely to step back from his penchant for Glenn Beck-style conspiracies. In an interview with Fox News Sunday just a few days after he became a senator, Cruz claimed that “I don’t think what Washington needs is more compromise, I think what Washington needs is more common sense and more principle.”

I commented on this article on May 4th,2013 , when there were just a few comments.recently I went back to read the rest of the 200 comments. The article was good but Oh boy the comments are educational. all of the information that these care 2 members have at their finger tips. to discuss back and forth between members, is very eye opening. Keep the information coming. The more you hear from Cruz and the more you read about the repulsive teabagger party it is eye opening. He talks about Obama putting Sahria law in place, that is nonsense, but what the republicans are doing in the state congress around the country to limit woman and the personal control of their own body is a horror, The conspiracy in America is being conducted by the republicans and the puppet master, and the money bags of billionaires trying to buy their way to the top. get everything for free, ,pay no taxes, have no laws to follow, no departments or judges to stop them from destroying this country....period.

If only the media would pay attention to people with sane & rational thoughts and simply ignore thoughtless morons like this

Nicely worded John H. and completely correct in my opinion. Much better post than I. I never used to categorize folks or make such angry comments but I've seen our wonderful country be lead down a hateful and destructive path for more than a decade now with a lot of the hate and disdain being shouted since President Obama took office and the intentions of those doing it are vile and self serving. That is not who we are and that is not what was intended when our nation was formed. If we don't protect what's left of our democracy, individuality and respect for each other even when we disagree and start turning it back around now, I unfortunately have great fear. More times than not anymore that's where my emotions come from now. I'm hoping and fighting for the day again when common sense, caring and respect for this country rules the day instead of corruption and hate driven lies and rhetoric. Rude, crude and outright unrelenting lies and venom has far too much attention given to it and we've become apathetic about the acceptance of it.

Shirley A. It only took 4 little words to change the politics of the whole nation. And you are correct concerning the racism rampantly present in the Republican Party and it has been there for a very long time. I’ve mentioned several times, here and in other places that I believed the real sentiment in the near constant chant of “Take back our White House” we have heard since January 20, 2009 was get the black man out of our White House. It doesn’t take much of a historian to know that for decades the South was solidly Democratic, that all changed on March 15, 1965 when LBJ spoke the four words to which I alluded earlier they were “…and we shall overcome.” The Republican Party of today is not an honorable institution and I think it quite possible we may see the demise of the GOP at least as a national political entity they have lost the popular vote in five of the last six Presidential Elections and though Republicans retained control of the House they lost the popular vote for that institution by more than a million votes. Anyone who takes an honest look at the nation and the way it functions or more truthfully doesn’t function would have to concede that the country will be better off without the Republican Party. I’m not suggesting a government of only one political party at all but a conservative party with a hint of intelligence should take the GOP’s place.

@Sarah H. I suppose the fact that the information is TRUE should have no bearing on your opinion on the article. Ted Cruz is the man he is today because the entire Republican Party has slipped so far to the right they can no longer even see the center. He thinks his puerile behavior will curry him favor with the right wing crazies and he is probably correct. It is, however, merely a façade which if he is careful & a bit prescient, will grant us all have the pleasure of observing him become someone else when the wind fetches to port.

By the way, Does anyone wonder why there were 50+ attacks on American posts overseas while the ultimate idiot Bush was President and only 3 short lived investigations into those. The birther crap didn't bring down President Obama as hoped, the maniacal lying didn't do it so it's on to the next disgusting campaign of smear and lies with them pushing on Benganzi like rabid dogs that can't find their bone. Can't wait until the Republican party ceases to exist because Americans see through the hate, racism and downright amoral party.

7:19AM PDT on May 11, 2013

Why is it that the Republican jackasses have lied on, slandered, vilified, defamed and are on a constant friggin witch hunt instead of doing their damn jobs and getting this country back on track from the horrid administration that left us in shambles in SO many ways is excused from hearing that their basic underlying reason President Obama is attacked with such venom is because the Republican Party is STILL full of racist pigs that couldn't stand that they were beat by a black boy, not once but twice. They refuse to let democracy work in our Nation for their selfish and self-righteous power mongering and greed driven intent and motives but God Forbid anyone make it directly clear just why THIS Congress and administration has been undermined and obstructed at every turn. The Republican party has become of bunch of childish, racist fools and have gotten so embolden with their venom of revenge they are a complete detriment to this nation. It is obvious to the most casual of observers with an ounce of common sense and intelligence just EXACTLY why THIS President has been attacked and resented by the arrogant hypocrites but the media and the hide your head in the sand Americans just don't want to put the label that belongs on their obstruction and hate campaign. The Republicans ARE vengeful, ignorant, racist fools and I won't be voting for any of their sorry asses the rest of my life no matter how they want to pander, spin, lie or manipulate information.

By the way, anyone wo

This is just the attacking of a Republican who MIGHT run for president. They did it to Romney, they did it to Bush.

4:37PM PDT on May 7, 2013

Unfortunately, due to the fact that Cruz's mother is a U.S. citizen, Cruz is a "natural born" U.S. citizen.

The weight of legal and historical authority indicates that the term "natural born" citizen refers to a person who is entitled to U.S. citizenship "by birth" or "at birth."

This means either a person born in the United States are born abroad to a U.S. citizen- parent. Cruz meets that requirement and is a "natural born" citizen and therefore eligable to run for president.

This is the big mental disconnect that the "birthers" have. Even if their wild crazy fantasies were true and President Obama had been born in Kenya he would still be a "natural born" U.S. citizen.

Of course President Obama was not born in Kenya, but it would be a moot point even if he was.
