Fluke Rejects Limbaugh’s Apology As More Sponsors Leave

Georgetown law student Sandra Fluke took Rush Limbaugh’s non-apology for what it is–a reaction to the pressure of fleeing advertising dollars saying it “changes nothing” in the ongoing battle over how to frame the battle for contraception coverage in health insurance plans.

Fluke appeared on ABC’s “The View” on Monday to discuss the apology and said, “I don’t think that a statement like this, issued saying that his choice of words was not the best, changes anything. Especially when that statement is issued when he’s under significant pressure from his sponsors, who have begun to pull support from his show.”

A total of twelve advertisers have already left Limbaugh, including Sears and AOL after Limbaugh’s relentless personal attacks on Fluke and all women who use contraception.

This is a very bad story for Rush Limbaugh and the only way it changes is if the right successfully pivots the story away from demonizing women who use contraception and toward a perceived government overreach. So far, they don’t seem to be capable of doing so.

That is great news for Democrats in both the short-term and the long-term as Republicans look immediately reactionary and unfocused on an economic recovery just as a generation of young women voters come of age when the Republicans are attacking the pill and calling them “sluts”. It should go without saying that this is a losing strategy for Republicans, no matter what their theocratic base may believe.

Republicans want to open your vagina like the Nazi Germans use to do! ‘Oh how we dilute ourselves to think we women have an equal say in this country. We will never be equal until we get more women in the state houses and in the national political arena that are pro women. No women in name only but women that goes to the mat for our needs. Ask your candidates where they stand on women rights before you vote. Ask them where they stand on your freedom to birth control, Roe vs Wade, equal pay, family issues'. All Republicans are scum! Just watch how they vote!

She was chosen because of her activism. It wasn't unearthed (like we have to find out about Republican actiivities), it was transparent. Generally, when a person is asked to speak before a Congressional hearing, it is because they are active fighting for the issues of which they speak. It would make no sense to put someone before potentially millions of people, only to stumble and fumble. A speaker should be articulate, know the facts, and present the context in a manner that conveys there passion the pertaining to the issue.

Lee W. Funny you should say that, Lee. I had been thinking the same thing about SOME (not all) of the people who post here.

The truth is, in my opinion, is that Ms. Fluke represented herself very well. She presented well and spoke clearly. She made a cogent arguement. In that way, she was a good choice. Here's the problem now, however, the conservative operatives have unearthed information that she is a "professional" activist. (I'm not certain what that means, involved in more than one cause, maybe. Do you know? ) It was, I think, always difficult to see her as a desperate college student - attending an Ivy League law school. Her crediblity was cracked, in addition, with her connection to the White House. I sure wish they had vetted and found someone who better represented what she claimed to be even if they had to trade off the well-spoken piece.

The m.o. of Tea Bags and far right Republicans is they do not check for fact, nor will they watch videos of actual footage, but they are all about going to sites that will fabricate, voice over, doctor documents, etc. That's what they are all about. No substance, just more lies from the 'dead right'.

Look, Sandy F. obviously did not see the video, she only saw Rush the pig video! So cut her a break, maybe she rides in a short bus or her elevator does not go all the way to the top! She is a perfect example of what a Republican conservative moron is all about.

Sandy F. Still waiting for your comments after you read what Ms Fluke said and what fathead said.

Anne - if Sandy E. actually listened to what Fluke had to say in the video, she'd have to concede her devotion to Limp is ill placed. Limp is attracted to women like Sandy E because she exemplifies the typical Stepford wife image. Big bonnet/no bees.

Very good point in there about the fact that the Republicans are aggravating a new generation of young female voters.
