G.W. Bush: I Wish Those Tax Cuts Weren’t Named After Me

G.W. Bush: I Wish Those Tax Cuts Weren’t Named After Me

When former President George W. Bush first passed massive tax cuts for the wealthy, they weren’t expected to be a permanent addition to the tax code.  But in 2010, the lame duck session of Congress held unemployment benefit extensions hostage in order to have them renewed through 2012.  Concerned about the job market and how the unemployed would make ends meet, Democrats caved and voted the extension of the Bush Tax cuts, and that extension is becoming a campaign issue for yet another election.

But as for the tax cuts’ namesake, well, he admits he sort of wishes they were called something else.

“I wish they weren’t called the ‘Bush tax cuts’,” the former president told a crowd at tax conference.  But that doesn’t mean he thinks they should disappear.  “If they were called some other body’s tax cuts, they’re probably less likely to be raised.”

But unlike the rest of his party, he does believe that there needs to be more done to stimulate growth, even if that means bypassing some spending cuts  “Most of the political debate — and I guess rightly so — is about our balance sheet. But we believe that, in order to solve the balance sheet, first and foremost, you’ve got to grow the private sector. And therefore, the focus ought to be on private-sector growth….The pie grows, the debt relative to the pie shrinks, and with fiscal discipline, you can better solve your current account deficits and your entitlements.”

Still, as always, raising taxes just isn’t an option. “If the goal was public-sector growth, it’d be a short conference. We just raise taxes.”

This man along with all of the other war criminals should be in prison, yet, Bush gets up to $100,000 for speaking engagements. The old saying "crime doesn't pay" certainly doesn't apply in this case. Like all war criminals, his day of reckoning will eventually catch up with him. Too bad it's not sooner.

I live in Canada and it was heartwarming to read recently that Dick Cheney was afraid to visit our country as he feared for his life. Bush, Cheney and all of their cronies aren't welcome here.

We cannot forgive the Simpleton. He helped himself and his rich friends. He invoked reconciliation both times in 2001 & 2003; Congress actually was not likely to pass such blatant give-aways to the wealthy. Georgie the Simpleton. I used to think he was an idiot, but I came to the conclusion he is just a simpleton. He gave me a charge whenever he would utter a word beyond 3 syllables, stop a moment to marvel at himself, and continue.

john h. said: Kenneth M. please tell if im wrong about the democrats having control of the house and senate in 2008 you cant you dumbass.

john h. with your intelect, i'd refrain from calling people dumbasses, because you are the proverbial pot calling the kettle black. true by the number of seats, the dems had the majority in both houses, but with the help of joe lieberman and the right wing blue dog DINO's the republican's maintained control of policy in both houses. obama never had the support of the blue dogs and never will. the right wing of the democratic party rarely supports the party on the core issues, they are Democrats In Name Only. they always have been and always will be.

"Hypocit: Just where in YOUR "balanced" posts have you done anything other than blame [D]s? But I guess given your other debilitating issues, being a hypocit is not high on your list of worries".

Ah Kenneth........And your excuse is what???
