German Pussy Riot Supporters Face Criminal Charges (Video)

German Pussy Riot Supporters Face Criminal Charges (Video)

Three Pussy Riot supporters staged a demonstration in a German cathedral on Sunday and now face criminal charges for their acts. At least three people showed up to cathedral in Cologne on Sunday morning wearing masks and carrying banners that read, “Free Pussy Riot and all prisoners,” RT News agency reports.

The protesters were quickly removed from the scene, arrested, and have been taken in for questioning. None of the activists resisted arrest, though a video of the protest that surfaced online shows many members of the protest being dragged out of the cathedral rather forcibly. The serving Bishop, Heiner Koch, reportedly watched the protest quietly and after the demonstrators left, asked that the congregation pray for Pussy Riot and the Russian people.

The protesters could face up to three years in prison for disrupting a religious service, under German law. According to the Moscow Times, the protesters face further questioning before the prosecutors decide whether or not to press charges.

The three people, all in their twenties and thirties, staged their protest a week after three members of the Russian punk protest group, Pussy Riot, were sentenced to two years each in prison for “hooliganism fueled by religious hatred.” The sentencing spurred on a number of demonstrations around the world and the three women have now become worldwide icons of free speech and women’s rights.

Russian authorities are searching for more members of the Pussy Riot group suspected to have been present at the February Moscow cathedral protest. They could face some of the same terrible treatment as their already imprisoned counterparts. Fear has not stopped many supporters from staging daring protests. Anonymous Pussy Riot supporters reportedly spray painted two cathedrals in the Pskov region last week demanding that the women be released.

The topless feminist group from Kiev, Femen, also staged an outright protest against the Russian Orthodox Church and the Russian government last week. One member of Femen took a chainsaw to a Christian cross on a hill in the capital city while two other members helped her to pull it down from its pedestal. The activist could face up to four years in prison for her supportive actions. The video below shows footage of the topless protest, and does clearly involve some nudity.

The Moscow Times notes that Russia’s foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, stood behind Pussy Riot’s sentencing, noting that the women would have faced prison in various other countries, including Austria, Germany, France, Finland and Israel. The newest arrests in Germany prove Lavrov’s point, but it remains to be seen how the German justice system compares to Putin’s current justice system, which has often been accused of aligning with the Russian Orthodox Church in a political ploy for dominating the population.

Pretty sure in every country, you can be arrested for doing this though, just not sentenced to two-three years like the Russian version of this was

I guess they didn't learn anything did they. Although I agree with and support their principle doing it inside a church is not acceptable. You go there to pray or to take communion. Even though I'm not religious it is not acceptable to me anymore than it is when I read aobut Muslim terrorists taking over a church or the burning or destruction of any religious building regardless of individual faith. I may not agree with the religion but others do and it is their place of worship. The public street is the place for acceptable protest.

I am for free speech and women's rights, although don't necessarily support these types of protestations, being non-violent and preferring pacifist ways....
Unfortunately, radical ways of protesting, such as nudity and aggressive acts, are often the only way to get noticed and get a point across....
There is some truth to Linda E;'s comment, although her comment is just as aggressive as FEMEN and PUSSY RIOT's acts!
Still believe that PUSSY RIOT and FEMEN type groups will abound and continue to grow internationally - for a reason!

Thanks for sharing this, I think this is a very importatnat issue. I do NOT think that its ok in any way to "protest" in a church or any religious holy place- but I DO think that Pussy Riot's should be realesed now, they have been in "jail" for half a year now in very hard circumstances, and 2 years in jail I belevie is way to much!!!

@ Bill
"I suggest some take off the rose colored glasses, I am all for free expression but you do not attack religous symbols you have a choice of agree or disagree unless you want religous war."

I suggest you take the rose colored glasses off yourself, Bill. YES- we will go to a religious war, one we are willing to die for- because some of us would rather be dead that follow your Christian Law or Sharia Law.

All the same Taliban, really.
