Relax, CO2 is Good for You!
posted by: Nancy Roberts 133 days ago

Look at the happy elk and blossoming flowers, thriving in the elevated carbon dioxide levels! Tremble as our jobs are threatened by, um, well, by something!
A new ad campaign promises to alert the unsuspecting American public to a major boondoggle: global climate change caused by human activity. And what's the latest outrageous lie? That higher levels of CO2 are bad for you and bad for the planet. Fortunately, we have friends at two new organizations, who are revealing that the international scientific community is manipulating us into believing we've got to act now against the buildup of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
The Washington Post reports that long-time oil industry executive H. Leighton Steward has teamed with Corbin J. Robertson Jr., chief executive of and leading shareholder in Natural Resource Partners, a Houston-based owner of coal resources, to get out the message that higher CO2 levels will actually help the Earth's ecosystems. They have invested $1 million into two new organizations, one to lobby, one to educate the public. How lucky we are that these fearless oil and coal industry executives are leading this charge for truth.
Forgive the sarcasm. If we didn't laugh, we'd cry. Once again, dirty energy industry veterans, who have made millions working for the industries that are undermining the health of the planet, are using their copious funds to "set the record straight" on global warming, this time with an eye to defeating the cap and trade legislation that is coming before Congress in the Waxman Markey bill.
According to the Guardian, Co2isgreen is running this ad in New Mexico and Montana. It begins: "Congress is considering a law that would classify carbon dioxide as polution. This will cost us jobs." The ad finishes with a bracing reminder to go to the co2is green website "because we ALL need CO2."
It goes without saying that these gentlemen have the right to free speech and to spend their money in promoting it. As citizens, it's our job to question and educate, expose and maybe, lampoon. The cynical manipulation of "facts" in service to a doomed industry would be sad, except that the stakes are high. Our system is controlled by those with deep pockets and friends in high places. It is up to the rest of us to debunk the lies and defend our planet and our future.

Wow! Thank you so much Nancy! Showing people that CO2 is a fundamental part of our eco-system and helps more plants grow! ... Oh wait, that was sarcasm? So instead of providing us with actual information as to why your opinion is correct, you will just write about how big evil companies are trying to pollute our minds and we should all hate them since they want the world to end?
Nancy you have to realize that these companies don't care about good or bad, they only want more profits. If they could get billions of dollars by spreading peace through the world and helping stop wars, they would be just as eager to enforce that as they currently do supporting the opposite. Don't fall victim to the simplistic ideals of there being such a thing as good and bad people. There are only people, and everyone is capable of good or bad actions. Even if the message these companies are sending are for the wrong reasons, they still contain simple truths as to how our ecosystem works.

Wait! Did you know that all economically successful greenhouses elevate CO2 levels to at least 1500ppmv (depending upon the plant species grown). Why?, because plants grow better that way; the plants convert CO2 and water into organic products (in the presence of light and with chlorophyll) and produce oxygen as a by-product! More basic science. If our earth had a CO2 concentration of 1500ppm instead of the puny 375ppm, we'd all be much better off! WATER VAPOR is the primary "greenhouse gas" NOT CO2. The temperature rises caused by CO2 are greatest at the first 210ppm and dramatically decline as CO2 increases to levels greater than that. CO2 IS NOT a pollutant now and will never be in the forseable future and will never produce a much warmer earth. The factors which WILL produce a hot earth are increased solar energy levels and the wobble of the Earth's axis which produces maximum warming. Has anyone out there ever heard of the Hysithermal Interval of 7000 years BP? The earth was much much warmer then - but WHOA!! no people burning pertroleum or massive amounts of coal existed during this warm period. Ever wondered what caused these very high temperatures of the earth's surface if we people weren't there? A little food for thought for those of you who can still think for yourself. Enjoy your day!

Monica B.,
Your posts worry me more than a little bit. I have a few things I would like to address....
While it is true that carbon monoxide is much more toxic than carbon dioxide that doesn't mean that carbon dioxide is harmless. Carbon dioxide can be toxic if levels get too high; if there is too much CO2 than there likely is not enough oxygen. Since oxygen is so important to human life (yea for respiration) if you don't have enough then you will die. So please remember that anything can be toxic if the dose is high enough; heck, water can be toxic to humans if too much is consumed (there have been documented deaths of this happening). Also note I agree that everyone should be sure to have a CO monitor in their homes to protect them; I am not making light of CO poising.
Next, I hope that you and others do not assume that if something occurs naturally that it is safe for you. Arsenic can be found naturally in ground water but I still wouldn't drink it (and I suggest you don't either since arsenic is also highly toxic). On another note, bears also occur naturally in the environment but I wouldn't try to make friends with it, would you?
Finally, I agree that we need more plants to help the health of the environment and deforestation should be stopped (much harder to do in reality than to think about theoretically). Unfortunately I don't think planting vegetation is enough to outpace the growth in CO2 emissions so we do need someway to manage it and try to lessen

Maria,
Yes, carbon monoxide is bad. It is one part oxygen molecule and one carbon, whereas carbon DIoxide is one part carbon to two oxygen and is not toxic.
You will find CO naturally in volcanic eruptions, found in smoke from fires, exhaust from chimneys in homes, found in natural gas and gas ovens which is why they must be vented properly. Natural gas heating and exhaust from cars that do not have a catalytic converter on them. So when you go to an inspection facility and your car fails then chance are your catalytic converter is not working properly and your car is emitting too much carbon monoxide. People often confuse this with carbon DIoxide which is not toxic. It is found in the atmoshpere as well, but is eventually oxidized into CO2 (carbon dioxide).
Here are other CO producing pollutants .... backup generators, portable generator, lawn mowers, power washers, improper burning of wood, coal, oil, paraffin, propane, natural gas, trash, furnaces, ranges, water heaters, room/space heaters and more. So if you use any of these household items you may want to consider getting a CO detector for your home as several hundred people die annually from CO poisining in the home.

WOW people need to go back to 4th grade science class. Everytime you exhale you are exhaling carbon dioxide. In order for trees and vegetation to survive they NEED carbon dioxide as they absorb it, and turn around and produce oxygen for all us air breathing creatures to survive. ONE acre of forest absorbs 6 TONS of carbon dioxide annually and releases 4 TONS of oxygen annually, or enough oxygen for 18 people to breathe in one year. You want to reduce CO2, plant more trees and stop deforestation and we will all breathe better.
So for all the people that failed basic science and believes carbon dioxide is the enemy please do not vote and go back to school. Next they will say methane is bad ... oh wait they already have ... lol. So stop farting too. Maybe this administration should enact the fart tax to go along with cap and trade.

What did you expect? Your Big Business is bent on ruling the world although that will result in ruining the world. They are a conglomerate of the most evil voracious vultures that ever polluted this planet and because of your very corrupt form of "Democracy" they hold your politicians permanently and securely under their thumb. You have recently had something of an opportunity to trim their satanic activities but by bailing them out you have perpetuated the problem.

OK Co2 is good for you. Keep on farting and you get Methane as well so double the benefits

I would laugh if it wasn't so sad about the comment Al Gore is a "charlatan". It shows me how ill informed some are and how fear based decisions are made in this country. What you need to do is look at the intention of the communicator. Al's intentions are good whether you want to believe it or not.

Maria,
Yes, carbon monoxide is very bad for you and it is produced by cars and incomplete combustion of organic matter (wood stoves, gas heaters, etc.). But even if carbon dioxide is not as toxic as carbon monoxide, it is a problem now, as there is far more in the atmosphere than plants are able to use up. That is what is causing the global climate changes we're experiencing now.
I would find it hilarious that people are actually spending money to feed us propaganda about CO2 being good for you, if I hadn't already had proof that there are still plenty of people that are only eager to agree with it. That is actually more sad than funny.

I agree with Nancy B., BALANCE is the key. Just the right amounts of carbon dioxide and oxygen to sustain life on earth. Also, isn't it CARBON MONOXIDE which is the dangerous carbon, not dioxide? Plants need carbon dioxide to keep them alive and to produce oxygen.
