Golden Rice and Other GMO Fairy Tales

WikiLeaks documents show just how tight the connections are between the biotech industry and the US government, a more than cordial relationship that began before Obama came into office. Truthout reported this week, “Dozens of United States diplomatic cables released in the latest WikiLeaks dump on Wednesday reveal new details of the US effort to push foreign governments to approve genetically engineered (GE) crops and promote the worldwide interests of agribusiness giants like Monsanto and DuPont.”

Here are two excerpts from leaked cables:

US Ambassador for France Craig Stapleton, December 14, 2007: “…we should not be prepared to cede on cultivation because of our considerable planting seed business in Europe…

“Country team Paris recommends that we calibrate a target retaliation list that causes some pain across the EU…”

A 2010 cable marked “sensitive”: Embassy Rabat’s Economic, Agriculture, and Public Affairs Sections request Biotech Outreach Funds as outlined in the proposal below to support efforts to influence scientists and policy makers in Morocco regarding the benefits of agricultural biotechnology.”

So much for regulators, and so much for the government’s looking after the interests of people at home or abroad. Clearly, the US government is more concerned about trade relations and the income from a highly successful agribusiness sector than about the health of people or the planet.

This is exactly what the tobacco industry did. It forsaw the decline of its product use in the United State and went on a (successful) campaign to sell their product to third world countries. They were able to do this successfully largely due to Senator(ex) Bob Dole(R). He actually told the President of the Philipines if they wanted the aid package from the U.S. they had to accept U.S. tobacco to be sold in their country. This is how the U. S. manipulates poor countries. Now nearly 50% of Philipine boy 8-14 yrs old are habitual smokers.

Should the US government pressure developing countries and trading partners to adopt GMO crops?

I think the US government has no business pressuring any other country until it cleans up it's own mess on this issue, such as allowing seed control, allowing food to not be labeled as containing genetically engineered contents, allowing companies to brainwash children with their bias information on biotechnology, etc.. Bill Gates is wealthy for a reason and that is through profitability on anything he is involved with. Monsanto is no different with profit being #1, and it's through supply and demand is why they exist.
