Gov. Rick Scott Ignores DOJ Demand To End Voter Purge

Gov. Rick Scott Ignores DOJ Demand To End Voter Purge

Gov. Rick Scott (R) plans to ignore a Department of Justice demand that his administration stop purging its voter rolls in violation of federal law.

Janell Ross reports that Scott ordered election officials to continue the purge, even in the face of evidence that a disproportionate amount of names on the list are voters of color. In an initial list of 3000 voters the state suspects are non-citizens, blacks and Latinos were disproportionately represented. Analysis by the Miami Herald found nearly 60 percent of the people on the list to be Latino despite the fact that Latinos constitute just 13 percent of the state’s electorate.

However election officials are not comfortable moving forward with the purge and have been instructed to stop by attorneys representing the Florida State Association of Supervisors of Elections. But doing so places them in direct conflict with Scott and Secretary of State Ken Detzner. The plan for now is for those counties that have already started to purge rolls to continue checking for ineligible voters but to only purge those names that have present identifiable and verifiable information that they should not be on the list of registered voters.

The Scott administration has until Wednesday to formally respond to the DOJ demand it cease the purge.

Scott is among a hand full of Southern Republican governors actively challenging the Obama administration on all things civil rights. Florida joins Texas and Arizona as states spoiling for a fight over voting rights and minority representation. The push to tighten voter restrictions coincides with aggressive gerrymandering efforts and amount to a wide scale, two-fold disenfranchisement. The result is that minority voters are left with literally fewer votes and representation.

It is no coincidence that these efforts also coincide with the fact that minorities have now become the majority in this country. They represent a sad and desperate attempt to grab and hold power in the face of a dramatically changing world. That also means that the fight over voting rights, and civil rights in general, will only become more intense and more important if we’re to stamp out the neo-Confederates currently leading the Republican party.

Randy-Illegal aliens do not vote, all studies have shown there is no illegal alien voting problem. The goal of these laws is to disenfranchise legitimate voters.

Purges are to rid the voter rolls of fraud; only people who are in the country legally should be able to vote. If anyone has a problem with the laws, such as entering the country legally, have a problem in and of themselves.

What the article didn't mention: How many are actually illegal and cannot vote? If they registered illegally are not citizens, then they cannot vote and should go to jail. I personally believe that voting is such a grand and valuable right that it should be protected at all costs. I do not have a problem with showing an ID at the voting booth. My last name is not prevalent out there, however, at the voting area, and airports, I have seen my last name called numerous times. What I don't want is the type of vote rigging which happened in this country in the past. If Florida has stopped legal voters, then the DOJ should fix it.

This is Florida, people. Since when do they follow election laws and care about disenfranchising voters?

The GOP has become so arrogant that they believe they can take any issue to the S/C if they lose in the lower courts since they have been able to place their tools on the court and manage to refuse to approve enough liberal judges to be appointed. It worked for them in the 2000 election election, and all they need is a simple majority ie. {"Citizens United"). Thomas, Scilia, Roberts ie. have all been receivers of Koch brothers hospitality and monetary benefits to date, so what is to stop them. The court just goes through the motions of judging and finds ( 5 -4 ) in favor of the rich.

"To hear Republicans tell it, they are waging a virtuous campaign to crack down on rampant voter fraud – a curious position for a party that managed to seize control of the White House in 2000 despite having lost the popular vote. After taking power, the Bush administration declared war on voter fraud, making it a "top priority" for federal prosecutors. In 2006, the Justice Department fired two U.S. attorneys who refused to pursue trumped-up cases of voter fraud in New Mexico and Washington, and Karl Rove called illegal voting "an enormous and growing problem." In parts of America, he told the Republican National Lawyers Association, "we are beginning to look like we have elections like those run in countries where the guys in charge are colonels in mirrored sunglasses." According to the GOP, community organizers like ACORN were actively recruiting armies of fake voters to misrepresent themselves at the polls and cast illegal ballots for the Democrats.

Or maybe they ALL are just speaking Republicanese!

That is a language that is based mostly on opposites and projecting your own faults onto your opponents.

It is a language that is used primarily by Republican politicians, but more recently is being used by their follower's too... due to the excessive use of it on Fox (Faux) News! As it is readily apparent in a very few of the comments here...

Most non-Republicans can identify and translate these comments quite easily due to the lack of common
