Rev. John and Dorothy Reitan have been married for nearly 70 years. John is also a Lutheran pastor. They have nine grandchildren, two of whom are gay. This is a video John and Dorothy recorded talking about their reasons for supporting equality in Washington state.
Governor Chris Gregoire signed Washington’s marriage equality bill into law last month.
A move to put marriage equality on the ballot is already underway. However, there has been some controversy, indeed a legal complaint has been made, that the ballot title drafted by the state’s attorney general is in fact biased. Read more on that here.
A “Decline to Sign” campaign has been started to try and prevent the issue even reaching the ballot, with the website carrying the message: “By declining to sign, voters are saying that marriage equality is important enough that it should not be subject to vote, but put straight into law.”
You can learn more about the campaign here.

+ add your ownWow. What a cool couple!! Rev. John and Dorothy Reitan have it right. LOVE is the basis of any marriage. If you have LOVE, you should be able to marry - gay or straight.
Reminds me of my maternal grandmother...knew I was gay and never batted an eye. Never once considered me less than her other grandchildren...she supported me and loved me until they day she died...
Thank you for the article.
everyone has said what I would like to.....very inspiring....very Christian, true Christian, that is, following the teachings of Christ.....your grandchildren must be so proud of you.....thank you for sharing in such a kind & loving way :)
What a beautiful love story! This is what marriage is all about. The most important thing in the world is LOVE! This family is so blessed to be led by grandparents that have their heads and their hearts in the right place.
Cute!
that is an awesome idea, "decline to vote" but the reality is that if people supporting gay marriage doesnt vote than everyone who doesnt will vote and as a result no law allowing gay marriage will pass
Terrific post and video. How wonderful that their grandparents support ALL of their grandchildren. I hope other grandparents and parents watch this and support any member of their family who is gay.
Very informative post.
Yep, I can get that Jesus is the foundation in this relationship and these grandparents want the same for their family. Halleluia!
