Guess Who Got Caught Deleting Emails Now – Oh, It’s Trump

This past weekend, rumors about email scandals reawakened when Republican FBI Director James Comey bafflingly acted independently of the DOJ to say that the FBI had a new (although possibly old) batch of emails that “may or may not” pertain to Hillary Clinton’s servers.

Since nothing concrete about these emails has come to light, let’s refocus our attention on some other deleted emails with actual proof behind them. Though these emails were deleted by a presidential nominee, it wasn’t Clinton this time. Nope, these emails were deleted by Donald Trump and his team.

Newsweek’s new lengthy exposé on Trump companies’ habitual destruction of documents in disregard to court orders is a thing of beauty. It uses thousands of court documents to piece together Trump’s history of eliminating damaging evidence against himself, even after courts demand him to turn over this information.

Let’s start with the most egregious example when he sued Power Planet Entertainment LLC, a company that built a pair of Indian casinos in Florida. In a nutshell, Trump said that PPE had conspired against him by secretly planning similar projects in the same area.

Because there was a statue of limitation on this matter, Trump would have had to learn of the rival company’s construction plans within only the past four years for it to be underhanded. Trump filed at exactly the four-year mark in January 2005, claiming that he had no knowledge of the rival project until January 2001. The defendants insisted he had been told all the way back in 1999, however, which would make Trump’s case unviable.

As such, Trump had to hand over all documents and emails pertaining to construction in the area to see what he knew and when. Trump and crew provided affidavits that the company did not set up network servers until 2001, so there were no emails to turn over. His IT workers were subsequently subpoenaed, and it turned out that Trump most definitely did have computer servers dating back to the ’90s.

Eventually, Trump’s attorneys had to admit the “no server” thing was a lie, but – bad news – there were no emails preserved, because the policy at the Trump workplace was to delete everything from the computers on an annual basis.

Years later when the court tried to intervene on any emails that might have accidentally been saved elsewhere, the folks at Trump’s business had wiped everything clean in defiance of a court order. Magically, everything had disappeared prior to January 2001, which coincidentally was when Trump says he learned of the casino deal. Facing sanctions from the court over this nonsense, Trump dropped the case.

This was hardly the only time Trump withheld evidence. In 2011, Trump was being sued and could have easily paid out the plaintiffs with an insurance policy he had. Instead, Trump swore to the court that he had no such insurance. After two years, the court discovered that Trump had the necessary insurance policy the whole time. Trump’s lawyer called it an “innocent oversight.”

Even before computers, Trump was known to destroy evidence. When he and his father were sued in the ’70s for failing to rent properties to black people, they repeatedly ignored court orders to hand over relevant documents. After stalling repeatedly, Trump was finally deposed and admitted he had his people shred the files to “save space” in the office, despite the fact that a court case was ongoing.

In order to similarly “save space,” these stories have been abbreviated immensely. For full details on all of these cases, devote 20 minutes to reading Newsweek’s thorough article – you’ll find the hypocrisy on display worthwhile.

Perhaps the reason that Trump is so critical of Clinton’s missing emails – he knows just how nefarious that sort of cover up can be. While Trump may not have been a government official at the time of these incidents, the fact that he hid or destroyed evidence in ongoing court cases on multiple occasions leaves him no less in the wrong.

Throughout the campaign, Trump has turned “Lock her up!” into his supporters’ anti-Clinton rallying cry due to her alleged mishandling of emails. If Clinton were to go to prison for anything of the sort, it looks like she should have a familiar cellmate in Trump.

David F As Global Warming is getting worse, you would just do nothing, block clean renewable energy, and expand natural gas fracking, and offshore oil drilling, which would intensify it, and poison our water, like your buddy Trump wants to do. Oklahoma just had a major earthquake that was linked to natural gas fracking. You should go move there, since republicans like you care nothing about our use of dirty fossil fuels, which is destroying our planet.

Given Donald Trump's ingrained compulsion to project his own behavior, especially wrongdoing, onto others, it's not at all surprising that he has been deleting emails and destroying evidence, since he has been focusing all sorts of attention on Hillary's email situation. If you want to know what Trump is up to, just listen to what he accuses his opposition of doing or saying or thinking. He apparently has so little self awareness that he doesn't realize he's projecting. Maybe there's not much 'self' there, under his over-inflated ego and his addiction to money.

Brain I am FULLY aware of How far right the left has been forced to come. But if you thimk all its going to take is one good progressive to change that you are simply an ideological idiot like many on the right are. We CAN NOT lurch back that fast!!! It took 40 effing years to get here…..its not going back overnight!!! I Understand your wanting it to. I want it to also. But it is NOT POSSIBLE!. Insisiting it happen accomplishes nothing. Thsi machine is HUGE and there are fortunes to mbe made or lost in the process. The government in its entirety could do it overnight. If we got alllllll liberals in all the branches that were veto proof it STILL couldnt happen overnight. This machine is MUCH larger than our government. We all KNOW how disgusting the oil industry is Brain. Exxon doesnt care what the government thinks or what we think. There are fortunes at stake. yer simply going to have to be patient….and realsisitic
