New Mexico Governor Susana Martinez (R) may be facing a series of bad hair days after her gay hair stylist chose to snip ties with her over her opposition to marriage equality.
Stylist Antonio Darden of Antonio’s Hair Studio in Santa Fe, New Mexico, who had cut Martinez’s hair on three previous occasions, declined cutting the governor’s hair a fourth time when her aides called to book another appointment.
“The governor’s aides called not too long ago, wanting another appointment to come in,” Darden said during an interview with a local news station.
“Because of her stances and her views on [gay marriage] I told her aides no.”
Apparently desperate, her aides called again the next day and Darden was once again forced to decline.
“I think it’s just equality, dignity for everyone,” Darden added. “I think everybody should be allowed the right to be together. My partner and I have been together for 15 years.”
Martinez has been a staunch opponent of same-sex marriage, maintaining that marriage is between a man and a woman.
Darden says that even though Martinez is an important customer, he will turn away her business because he is taking a stand over the fact that same-sex couples are not given the same rights as heterosexual couples.

+ add your ownI commend Antonio Darden for refusing to cut Governor Martinez's hair! This bigoted moron of a governor needs to get her head out of the 19th century, and quit practicing backwards government that "discriminates" against people simply because they love one another. "I pray to God" she doesn't get re-elected for another term. I wish all gay business owners would follow suit against the bigoted politicians in office and refuse to render services to them, because of their discriminatory behavior!! I'm ashamed to have her as my governor of this state!!!!
Good for Antonio Darden! Epic burn on Martinez, who deserved it! ::wicked laughter::
I'm with you, Lilithe M., I was hoping he had really "chopped" off the hair. What a letdown!
And Antonio, kudos to you for standing up for what you believe.
There may be a price to pay for Antonio, but how courageous to take a stand for the constitutional rights of same-sex couples. The governor will just have to deal with a bad hair day....

And here I was hoping he'd messed her hair up for good. I hope he told them why he was declining.
Sounds like poetic justice, given that more than one prominent Republican has called for businesses to be accorded their "natural right" to decline to provide goods and services to any would be customer based on their own arbitrary and capricious criteria.
Kudos to Antonio Darden! Thank you for article.
good for him!
Thank you.
