As rescue workers and humanitarian groups continue to work with the people of Haiti following a devastating earthquake, some women require special services and consideration. Organizations, like the UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, are working to address the unique needs of women that arise in the wake of a disaster.
Women in Haiti need sanitary napkins. These basic and critical supplies are often overlooked. Of course all people require food, water and clothing, but sanitary supplies are a health necessity too. The alternative, using rags, which is still common in many developing countries, can lead to infection.
The United Nations estimates as many as 37,000 women in Haiti are pregnant and could be at risk for complications without the appropriate maternal care. These women will need trained obstetricians and midwives to provide critical care.
Women in devastated areas are also at higher risk for sexual and domestic violence leading to sexually transmitted diseases, HIV, pregnancy and psychological damages. Sex can be used as currency to trade for food and shelter. This danger can be minimized when women and men are offered separate shelters, and police and military are trained and aware of the risks.
As we consider the needs of everyone in Haiti, we must remember that women, especially pregnant and menstruating women, have unique needs that must be addressed. We appreciate your cooperation with the brave Haitian women. Put a small amount of money in their hands, and watch the miracle happen.
Hi!
How can we donate pads to women in Haiti? Which organizations, specifically Canadian ones are working on this?
Thank you for posting this.
Thankyou for helping be able to help further.
it's so devastating everythign thathas gone on over there but good to see so many people doing what they can to help
They need food, water, shelter, medicine (medical care) and other basic needs and relocation. They also need money and jobs.
I made a donation to Medecins Sans Frontieres (Doctors without Borders) and will soon make another one. Those people are reall hurting - I wish I had more to give!
It's so horrible and sad
unbelievably devastating
Let us hope that someones beside the writer has thought of this.
