Herman Cain’s Great Abortion Confusion

76 comments Herman Cain’s Great Abortion Confusion

You would think that after telling interviewers that women should have to carry a pregnancy to term if they are victims of sexual assault, Herman Cain’s anti-abortion position would be considered pretty solid.  Yet somehow, in the last week that platform has become more convoluted than a Rick Perry debate performance.

It all started when, a few days after saying abortion should never, ever be allowed, Cain then gave an interview stating that it’s not okay for the government to make a family decision when it comes to the case of rape or incest.  When asked what he would do if his own grand daughter was impregnated by rape, Cain said, “What I’m saying is, it ultimately gets down to a choice that that family or that mother has to make,” he said. “Not me as president. Not some politician. Not a bureaucrat. It gets down to that family… I can have an opinion on an issue without it being a directive on the nation. The government shouldn’t be trying to tell people everything to do, especially when it comes to a social decision that they need to make.”

It’s the perfect answer for conservatives in general, who believe that the less government intrusion the better.  But for the social conservatives who now seem to be running the nomination process?  Well, those are fighting words.  After all, Texas Governor Rick Perry was attacked just for suggesting each state should get to decide abortion laws on their own.  Letting each family decide?  That’s practically criminal.

Perry, sensing weakness, moved in for the attack. “It is a liberal canard to say I am personally pro-life, but government should stay out of that decision. If that is your view, you are not pro-life, you are pro having-your-cake-and-eating-it-too.”

But Cain has tried hard to push back on the narrative, although it still has become a bit of a muddled mess.  Speaking to Megyn Kelly on Fox, Cain tried once more to clarify.

Now Cain is trying to redeem himself by embracing any anti-abortion scheme presented to him — even if they don’t really exist, such as his offer to sign a “Pro-life amendment,” despite the fact that presidents don’t sign constitutional amendments.

So, in conclusion, Cain thinks abortion is illegal, and that families should have the right to choose to partake in an illegal abortion if they need one. And he’d sign a constitutional amendment stating such, if presidents signed amendments.

apparently eating ones words shamlessly is part of main stream politics. What a farce this guy is. took a 180 degrees turn. It wouldn't have been a bad idea if Mama Cain considered Abortion when this guy was due.

@Jane B. I feel I agree.
@Ainsley C. "I wonder how many Mozarts, Rembrandts, Da Vinci we are aborting now."
Probably about as many Adolf Hitlers, Ted Bundys and Robert Picktons if we're being honest.
