In Colorado, Paul Ryan Finds Some Feminists
Normally campaign events are places where candidates go to glad-hand and chum the waters of their faithful for energy and votes. For Republican Vice-Presidential nominee Paul Ryan, campaign events have become something else.
At an event in Lakeland, Colorado Tuesday Ryan’s outdoor speech was met with a banner flown overhead that read “Hey girl, choose me, lose choice-P.Ryan”. The event was part of an online campaign designed to expose his horrific record on women’s issues, including choice. The campaign, Choose Ryan Lose Choice also has a tumblr page with plenty of pictures of an earnest-looking Ryan juxtaposed with affirmations of his policy, like “Hey girl, got birth control? Not for long.” and “Hey girl, you’ll love my choices for your body.” Brilliant.
In addition to the banner, the person “Fertilized Egg” was also admitted to the campaign event–an obvious and brilliant crack on Ryan’s support for the Sanctity of Human Life Act which defines fertilized eggs as humans, criminalizes contraception and outlaws abortion in all cases.
Ryan’s no stranger to campaign-stop protests though. On Monday a group of protesters interrupted his speech at the Iowa State Fair, accusing him of engaging in a “war on the middle class.” Before Romney tapped him for the ticket, in April a group of 76 protesters were arrested while staging a demonstration against Ryan’s plan to end Medicaid and perhaps most famously is the video of Ryan cracking a joke after a 71-year-old- man is pushed to the police and arrested after questioning Ryan’s policies at a town hall event.
These latest events show that the Ryan VP was energizing–just maybe not for the group the GOP hoped to engage.
