Hundreds of Bullfrogs Will Be Impaled During Tennessee Scholarship Fundraiser

To raise money for agriculture scholarships in DeKalb County, Tenn., an event called “Giggin’ for Grads” has been held annually since 2013.

Sounds like a cute name for a benefit concert, right?

Far from it. “Giggin’” refers to using asharp spear toimpale bullfrogs.

That’s right, on June 24 from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m., participants (all ages are welcome) who pay a $15 entry feeare encouraged to kill up to 20 bullfrogs using gigs, spears or pitchforks. There are prizes for those who kill the heaviest frogs.

“DeKalb County has some of the largest bullfrogs I have ever seen,” wrote Pettus L. Read, director of communications for the Tennessee Farm Bureau Federation, which sanctions the event. “Because of this fact, the idea of a ‘Giggin’ for Grads’ contest was born and about one of the greatest ideas I had ever heard of.”

Dan Strasser, with the Tennessee Young Farmers &Ranchers organization, which organizes the annual event, couldn’t agree more.

“It’s for a good cause that increases education in the area,” he told USA TODAY in 2013.

If he means it increases education about how to cruelly cause bullfrogs to suffer agonizing deaths, Strasser is absolutely right.

Bullfrogs arecoldblooded and haveslow metabolisms, so it takes a whilefor them to die from the stab wounds. “Gigged” frogs die of shock, organ failure or by bleeding to death.

“A method such as stabbing is extremely painful for the frog, who dies of massive hemorrhaging and usually asphyxiates on its own blood,” said Susana Paco, senior biologist with the Global Conservation Group, a Wisconsin-based animal welfare organization.

In the darkness, theparticipants don’t only kill bullfrogs but frogs, toads and other moving targets that may be endangered.

“A large group of people hunting frogs will also disrupt other area wildlife and have the potential to damage natural habitats as contest participants blunder around in the dark,” notes StopFrogAbuse.com.

Paige Massey, with Nashville Animal Advocacy, was among several protesters at the 2013 event. Nashville Animal Advocacy has protested the event every year and plans to be there June 24.

“They chose something that is morbid and gross and cruel,” she told WZTV FOX 17 in 2013. “It’s kind of embarrassing that such a violent event would be glorified so much.”

Last month the Global Conservation Group submitted a criminal complaint to the Tennessee Attorney General’s office, stating the event’s organizers are violating state animal cruelty, hunting and child welfare laws.

There are many more humane ways to hold a fundraiser (like the aforementioned benefit concert, for example). But ifthe organizers still insist on using sharp objects, Massey has a great suggestion.

“If you’re going to have a fundraiser where you’re going to go around and pick stuff off the ground with sticks, put it in a bag and whoever gets the most stuff wins,” she told WZTV FOX 17, “sounds like it ought to be a litter picking-up contest.”

Impaling bullfrogs is no way to raise scholarship funds. Please sign and share this petition calling for an end to the cruel “Giggin’ for Grads”tournament.

"About one of the better idea he ever heard of"... I can't believe what I just read. Also, I'm still trying to understand how it increases the education "in the area".

You can't take the stone age out of some people. I'm not even surprised or shocked anymore when I hear of these things. People are mostly trash, pure and simple.
