Is The CIA Funding Australia’s Green Groups?

Is The CIA Funding Australia’s Green Groups?

The CIA has tersely denied a claim by one of Australia’s richest men that it is funding Australian green groups.

Billionaire mine owner Clive Palmer has claimed that America’s spy agency is attempting to destroy Australia’s coal industry.

Palmer named the Green Party, which is part of the governing coalition, as well as Greenpeace and a leading green activist Drew Hutton. He said that legal action against mining developments is CIA-funded.

The Australian conservative opposition, financially supported by Palmer, have tried to laugh off his comments but the influence of Australia’s version of Russia’s oligarchs, those made mega-wealthy from Australia’s resources boom, is no laughing matter as far as the Labor-led government is concerned.

Australia’s Federal Treasurer, Wayne Swan, recently launched a broadside at the mining chiefs after they campaigned against a planned tax on their super-profits with a huge advertising campaign.

Palmer is also part of the chorus against Australia’s carbon tax, due to be implemented beginning on July 1.

Allegations about US covert influence in Australia are nothing new. They were there over the removal of Labor Prime Minister Gough Whitlam’s government in 1975 and revived again recently with the news revealed by Wikileaks that a prominent former Senator ‘informed’ to the US embassy. Palmer overtly played on the folk memory about Whitlam’s removal.

The CIA told the ABC, “Simply put, these allegations are false.”

If only the CIA was interested in the environment to begin with. I think not.

Australia allow Japanese whalers to enter its territory to slaughter whales in the Antarctic and Canada allow the annual massacre of seal pups, Mark D, I agree with you absolutely...good comment

Australia and Canada are hypocrites and liars since they're the big contributors to climate change and the destruction of the future of earth, Australia with it's huge mining and exports of climate changing dirty coal, and Canada with its filthy tar sands, led by that anti-environment psychopath Harper who should be thrown behind bars for the rest of his life for the crimes he's done.

I see no reason why Australian green groups, the CIA, and rich mine owners should mess with each other. Instead of fighting the tax, the rich mine owners should try to figure out how to invest in some solution to the global warming problem. Enhanced Geothermal Systems can make good use of CO2 as hydraulic/heat-transfer fluid thus sequestering the CO2. But it will take somewhat over $1 billion (2004 US dollars) to fund MIT School of Engineering (Chemical Engineering Department) to finish the R&D to get the cost down to $0.07/kWh and an increase of $35/ton for CO2 emissions to get the cost of coal-fired electricity up to $0.07/kWh. Failing to mitigate global warming somehow is likely to destroy civilization by massive failures of our food crops, also resulting in mass starvation.
