Just What We Needed: The Pre-Peeled, Plastic-Packed Orange

Written by Lloyd Alter

Hurrah, it’s finally here! The greatest advance in packaging since the pre-peeled banana.

Whole Foods, that bastion of healthy and sensible offerings, brings us the pre-peeled orange. Each one in its own plastic container to protect it! And unlike traditional orange packaging, it’s easy to open! It won’t roll off the table, and it’s recyclable!

Nathalie Gordon, who discovered this, tweeted:”If only nature would find a way to cover these oranges so we didn’t need to waste so much plastic on them.”

Whole Foods quickly realized they had a problem:

A spokesperson told HuffPo:

A lot of our customers love the convenience of our cut produce offerings, but this was a simple case where a handful of stores experimented with a seasonal product spotlight that wasn’t fully thought through. We’re glad some customers pointed it out so we could take a closer look.

While Twitter erupted with jokes aboutthe peeled orange, not everyone thoughtthey were funny. There was an outpouring of anger at Whole Foods from people who have trouble peeling oranges, such as the elderly and arthritic.

“As a person with limited hand dexterity, I look at this and see an easier way to eat healthy food,” theblogger crippledscholar points out. “I actively avoid eating oranges, not because I dislike them (they are definitely tasty) but because I have so much difficulty peeling them.”

What do you think? Are pre-peeled oranges a good idea?Is there a better way to offer healthy accessible food without adding more plastic to our world?

Wow! Just wow. Are orange sales down, and a new fancier way to market them had to be thought up? I'd hate to be the one responsible for this brainy idea.
