Lobbyist Stars In Super Bowl Anti-Union Ad [Video]

Wow. It takes a certain special kind of narcissism to star in your own astroturf campaign, but that’s exactly what Washington lobbyist Rick Berman did. And Berman didn’t star in just any old astroturf ad, he starred in an anti-union ad airing during the Super Bowl in a year and in a city where union-busting is front-and-center.

Berman specializes in creating nonprofit front groups that shill for corporate interests. His past clients include Phillip Morris, Coca Cola and Tyson Foods, and they hire Berman to shift public opinion in the form of issue-ads. Berman’s organizations always have innocent-sounding names like “The American Beverage Institute” and “The Employment Policies Institute” who push agendas like fighting minimum wage increases and pick fights with groups like Mothers Against Drunk Driving. And now they union bust.

In the ad that aired a group of “auto mechanics” complained that they had never voted fro the union they’re in. One of the mechanics: Berman.

This Berman creation is the Center for Union Facts and it’s sole purpose is to peddle misinformation about unions. And what better, more cynical way to sell that to the American public than to put the brains behind the deception right in the middle of the ad?

I know my comments are a bit late here but for those who keep spouting this dribble about people being forced to join unions, I have this to say, it's called democracy and the majority rules! That's how we do it here in the good old USA! Don't like it? Complain to the founding fathers, they'll listen to you about as much as anyone else should! NOT AT ALL!

Do you enjoy a living wage ? Thank a union member ! Do you have a safe work place ? Thank a union member ! Do you enjoy your weekends off from work ? Thank a union member ! Do you enjoy health care benefits from your employer ? Thank a union member ! Even if you do not belong to a union you get these benefits thanks to the fight of the unions . Not due to the generosity of the corporation you work for. If you think otherwise look back to before unions came into being and compare the benefits you have at this time.

Way back on 1:13 today, thomas m wrote:

"Unions have ruined quite a few men/women."

I then wrote thomas m to Name some people that Unions somehow 'ruined'.

What happened to thomas m? Why hasn't he responded to my question? Who exactly has been 'ruined' by Unions, thomas m?

I'm beginning to think that thomas m doesn't have any answers. He just wrote that either because he wants to stir up anger or he doesn't have a clue about what Unions are and what they do for us US workers!

Obviously, people don't know the history of labor in this country, or they would not be talking down unions. People who formed the unions did so at great personal risk to themselves and, often, their families. They took those risks to help create a better future for working people, mostly blue collar. Without unions, do you really believe we would have a minimum wage, paid sick time, paid vacations? Look at history before you complain about union dues to support the people who go to bat for all of us when they fight for better conditions for their members.
