Authorities in Tennessee have charged a 27-year-old man with an outrageous and tragic crime — putting a puppy in a running dishwasher and killing the dog.
Marcus Curry of Memphis was arrested on June 26 after workers at the apartment complex where he lives reported to police that they’d found the wet body of a dead puppy in the complex dumpster.
Contractors working at the Eden at Watersedge Apartments saw the German Shepherd mix puppy tied on a short cord on an apartment balcony for several days in a row. They noticed the dog had nothing to drink. One of the contractors, Henry Jones, took pity on the puppy and gave him some water.
When they saw Curry, the contractors told him he should take better care of his puppy. Curry then took his dog inside. An hour or so later, he emerged with a red duffel bag in hand. He threw it in a dumpster.
“I was thinking to myself ‘That must be the dog,’” Jones told WREG NewsChannel 3. Jones went over to the dumpster and pulled out the duffel bag. He said, “I unzipped the bag and saw the dog and it was wet.” The workers quickly called law enforcement.
Curry denied to police that he’d put the puppy in the dishwasher. He has only admitted to putting the dog in the duffel bag and throwing his body into the trash.
However, other witnesses tell a different story. One says Curry told him he’d put the dog in the dishwasher and “left it in there too long.” Another witness saw the puppy in the dishwasher, noting that when Curry took the puppy out, he was not moving.
Curry apparently was unhappy that the puppy was defecating inside the apartment, which may be why the dog had been tied outside on the balcony for several days. The concept of housebreaking the dog seemingly escaped Curry, as he reportedly put the poor creature into the dishwasher to keep him from further eliminating indoors.
Perhaps Curry believed being placed into a running dishwasher was a form of punishment for his puppy. Was this why he acknowledged having left him in there for “too long”? So far, there are no further details on why this man did such an unimaginably cruel thing to a defenseless animal.
Under Alabama Code Section 13A-11-14, the crime of “cruelty to animals” occurs when a person “intentionally or recklessly” subjects any animal to cruel mistreatment, subjects any animal in his custody to “cruel neglect,” or kills or injures without good cause any animal belonging to another.
According to the Alabama Attorney General’s website:
Cruelty to any animal is a Class B misdemeanor with a fine of not more than $3,000 or imprisonment in the county jail for not more than six months or both fine and imprisonment. On the second conviction the minimum fine is $500 or not more than $3,000 or imprisonment in the county jail for not more than six months or both fine and imprisonment. On the third conviction the minimum fine is $1,000 or not more than $3,000 or imprisonment in the county jail for not more than six months or both fine and imprisonment.
Curry was booked on charges of aggravated cruelty to an animal. His bond was set at $40,000. If convicted, Curry could be sentenced to a maximum fine of $3,000 or six years in prison.
