Man With Bombs Arrested Outside Kansas Immigration Hearing

Just as the Kansas state House committee opened three days of hearings on controversial anti-immigrant legislation backed by Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach a man with a truck full of explosives was arrested inside a tunnel leading to the Kansas Capitol.

Kobach is most famous for authoring Arizona’s SB 1070, the Alabama copycat anti-immigration bill and for his ties to nativists, as well as his crusade to criminalize abortion in the state.

The man arrested claimed to have an appointment but none was verified by authorities. The man’s truck had a specialty Florida license plate that is only issued to qualified U.S. military paratroopers. According to the AP it also had a Special Forces sticker on its bumper and other on a back window saying “Does my American flag offend you? Call 1 800 LEAVE THE USA” and another that read “Welcome to America. Now speak English.”

Authorities said the explosives were made with household materials and designed to spray shrapnel. The bombs were live anti-personnel explosives.

Authorities refused to connect the timing of the arrest to a coinciding rally at the Statehouse protesting policies pursued by the arch-conservative administration of Gov. Sam Brownback (R) but it’s hard to imagine Kobach and his supporters as the target of this terrorist plot.

What violence? The truck contained fireworks. That came out before Pieklo wrote her leftist propaganda. See Vince's post ahead of yours.

I wish we did not have so many people who thought that violence was a reasonable way to deal with legitimate disagreements.

You're right, nobody on CARE2 gives a (you know what) about being responsible as journalists. It's all about getting people who are too lazy to follow up on facts riled up that counts. The click counter probably is obviously important too as that's the income generator.

The updated LA Times article was on the 17'th at 4:11 PM. This article was posted on the 18'th at 9:17 AM. This information was far out of date when posted, and still has not been retracted or corrected. Any respectable organization would have updated this story.

Sorry Robert, but this demonstrates a complete lack of responsibility and honestly. Care2 is perfectly capable of updating this page, but the original story better suits the author's extreme bias. Where's the integrity in that?

Care2 would do much better for their causes if they raised their journalistic standards. When I joined Care2, I had hoped for some good, slightly left of center journalism, what I am seeing is extremist propaganda not that much different from that which the right (wrong) wing propaganda machine spits out.

So Robert, sorry that truth, integrity and honesty aren't that important to you. I'll be over at NPR and Mother Jones. Have a good day!

Vince. No one in care 2 gives a shit what YOU think their blog should write or not write.
She gives the story to an editor and they put the story in. Maybe that day there were more articles than they thought they should put out. New News came out after this one was written.
Maybe she will write a different story maybe she won't.

If you don't like how Care2 is doing it PLEASE start your own.

When she wrote the story it was accurate. Many of the stories in Care2 are 2 days old if you are an avid news hound. It is THEIR blog. They aren't trying to be a newspaper.

So Robert H, you seem to be saying that telling lies is acceptable? Is is acceptable to allow a serious error to go uncorrected? Or is it better to tell the truth, and admit errors when they occur and make them right. Blog vs news? Well, these articles are presented as news, should they not be accurate? Perhaps I should lower my expectations of Care2, and some of the other members such as yourself, is that what you are saying? Just trying to understand your defense of the sloppy writing, no offense meant. And if C2 is supposed to be like the tabloid papers near the checkout at the supermarket, my bad for not realizing that..

Yeah yeah yeah you said the same thing about Robin and half the other authors that write in the political blog……Notice I said BLOG not NEWSPAPER where there is investigative Journalism. She may have written the article a day ago. If your don't like what written here then vote with your feet. Or better yet…..start your own blog.

Yes, homemade fireworks should set off an alarm, but the alarm was false.

Jessica posted this highly inflammatory version of the story well after the updated LA Times story was posted and she has not bothered to retract/update/correct it since. Rousing rabble with partial truths seems to be more important than reporting the facts, and this author has a history of this in support of her causes. The word shameless comes to mind. Yes, Robert H, creating an issue is precisely what goes on.

Anyways, I'm glad it was a false alarm.
