Mass Slaughter Of 100 Sled Dogs

Mass Slaughter Of 100 Sled Dogs

A dog-sled company in Whistler, British Columbia, ordered the killing of 100 dogs in April, 2010, when bookings for adventure tourism slumped after the Olympic Games.

Vancouver radio station CKNW obtained documents revealing that 100 healthy sled dogs were killed in a mass slaughter at Outdoor Adventures Whistler last April 21 and 23.

TAKE ACTION: Sign the petition asking for the prosecution of those responsible.

If that wasn’t bad enough, the story actually gets worse. From CKNW: (Warning – this is pretty gruesome reading.)

Worksafe BC documents obtained by CKNW say an employee has been granted compensation after developing post traumatic stress disorder for having to kill the dogs himself over a two day period.

Lawyer Cory Steinberg says the employee “….. ended up having to do it…I guess the only way to describe it was “near misses”. It wasn’t always a clean, one-shot kill. Inevitably he ended up seeing and having to put the end to some horrific scenes.”

Steinberg speaks on behalf of the worker who doesn’t want to be named.

In most cases dogs were shot more than once, or had their throats slashed before they were pitched into what is described in the documents as a mass grave.  Some were still alive.

The company didn’t contest the Worksafe injury claim.  In fact,  they even made a correction, where the worker stated he had killed 70 dogs, the company corrected and wrote he had actually killed 100.

According to CKNW,  Mary Moriarty, the head of cruelty investigations at the BC SPCA says they are launching an investigation, after reviewing the Worksafe BC file. She adds that it’s a dirty secret of the industry that so many dogs are bred purely out of greed.

Moriarty says there appear to have been breaches of the animal cruelty act in the cull and criminal charges are a possibility.

Well, yes. A brief reading of Canada’s Animal Cruelty Act states that there is zero tolerance for animal cruelty.

It’s hardly surprising that the Outdoor Adventures employee suffered post traumatic stress disorder and is entitled to compensation, but there is no way to grant compensation to those dogs.

Let’s hope this heartless organization is prosecuted to the full extent of the law, and that we never have to read about such cruelty again.

Thank you !

Those perpetrators must be similarly punished and any ground for such cruelty must be
eliminated by the government!
All starts with "just" a economically motivated disposal of dogs and ends with
Auschwitz, Treblinka and Mauthausen.

I was curious as to whether or not there is any update on the stat of this situation. Outdoor Advantures website has been taken down, or at least I can't find it. I don't see any updates for the prosecution of the abusers. Anyone else know?

I fully agree w/Larry S. However I'll take it even further ~ OAW needs to be burnt to the ground while the owners & employees all watch. They should NEVER be allowed to open another business for ANYTHING again! They should all be banned from owning ANY dog for even a pet, as well. My fantasy continues w/having them all sliced 'just enough' across their balls & left to lie in a heap on top of each other, till they bleed out all over each other in a cold, cramped grave of snow, like the dogs suffered.

Let's hope the dog slaughterer never sleeps another good night for the rest of his life. He deserved NOTHING in compensation for what he did! He needed to TURN THEM IN, NOT OBEY BARBARIC ORDERS! SAVAGES...ALL OF THEM!

Each time when I read about the slaughter of innocent animals especially dogs, it's makes me very angry towards these sick and savages. Dogs have sense and they will know went their in danger. The only thing is that they could not speak. I will definitely continue to support to STOP such cruelty.

We all need to concentrate on being the voice of these sled dogs who suffered at the hands of very sick people, who have no empathy for any form of life~they make it all about money.
Yet the big black whole's will never be filled if we don't put laws into place to protect all forms of life~instead of venting we put that energy into making a differance~*

Grace D, please do not type in all CAPS! It's hard to read. As for the guy who did this, he didn't come forward to get money, he filed a claim for SSI because he said he was so traumatized afterwards for what he'd done.

If anyone's kept up with this, it was all over the news a couple of days ago that an animal rights group has succeeded in getting a court order to exhume the bodies of these dogs. Right now, they don't even have proof that they were killed, just this guy's testimony. This ain't over yet, folks!

I THINK THE GUY THAT CAME FORWARD TO GET COMPENSATION SHOULD BE CHARGED TO THE DUMB JERK SHOULDNT OF DONE HIS JOB HE SHOULD OF CALLED ON THE BOSS AND HE WOULDNT BE IN SUCH GRIEF HE DIDNT CARE TO KILL THE POOR DOGS...SO ROT IN JAIL WITH THE REST..HE WANTS MONEY HAHA HE IS A JOKE..they all need to rot in jail and not get out now this is just insane

Stephanie, if you bothered to read the dates, I responded to Larry and Cathy's posts the same day they were posted. The article is almost three months old, and I commented to it right after it was written and posted, and this is not the only article about the incident, which happened a year ago.

No, Larry and Cathy didn't ONLY suggest prosecution of those responsible......read what Larry suggested........"Prosecuted? No..., slash their throats only part way, then just before the pass out, let them see the bottom of the pit coming closer as their body weight gets them there" and Cathy......"These idiots are the ones that should be killed (and in the same fashion) as those poor dogs..........Slaughter them and throw them into a pit--that is all they deserve."

Charges HAVE been filed against those responsible, and while it's great that the story was "aired" and petitions circulated to be signed, calling for those responsible to be "slaughtered" is just too far over the edge. Care.2 is supposed to be about spreading the word regarding environmental issues, animal welfare, and justice for those who abuse it, but not killing them! I have plenty of compassion, and while I believe in an "eye for an eye" to some extent, it doesn't go to killing anyone except possibly serial killers, rapiest and/or child molestors. Of COURSE the man responsible needs to also be punished, but he did come forward. Death certainly isn't warranted.

Diane L., the article clearly states the dogs throats were slashed-
"In most cases dogs were shot more than once, or had their throats slashed before they were pitched into what is described in the documents as a mass grave. Some were still alive."

And if you actually read both Cathy and Larry's posts they are calling for the company and all those involved to be punished. Including the company owners but in my mine especially the man who actually committed this atrocity. He could have refused, quit or contacted the proper authorities if he had any conscience at all.
I happen to also agree that when you read something like this that is a true horror you feel so powerfully for these dogs that it can bring up feelings up rage. Any true animal lover would read this and their first thoughts would be that someone who committed such an atrocity deserves to experience the same demise. Does that mean we're going to go to BC and KILL this man? OF COURSE NOT. Most animal abusers go unpunished forever and those who are caught would never be punished in any extreme way. They get fined and the city gets richer and the animals are still dead or hurting.
Anyway why are you criticizing their timeliness of hearing about the story, you only JUST read their comments...why are you on such a compassionate site if you have no compassion within you?
