Morning Mix: Santorum Warns College Makes You Liberal

Morning Mix: Santorum Warns College Makes You Liberal

On the eve of the Arizona Republican primary Gov. Jan Brewer announced she’ll be making her endorsement Sunday. It’s hard to say how much sway her endorsement will bring with voters, but at a minimum it would represent the blessing of the hard-right establishment in Arizona. After all, one of Mitt Romney’s advisers is Kris Kobach, the architect of Arizona’s anti-immigrant law and rumored nativist, so a snub from Brewer would have to hurt. And if former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum ends of up with the endorsement it would further prove Romney just can’t gain the trust of social conservatives.

But don’t think he isn’t trying. Saturday Romney reminded voters in Michigan that he is still totally against gay marriage and cloning as a way to try and gain any support among the most rabid of Republican primary voters.

It’s hard to say Romney’s pandering to the homophobes of Arizona is paying off since Santorum is gaining fast in the polls leading up to the Arizona primary. But let’s remember this. In Arizona professors can’t swear but students can carry firearms so is it really any surprise Santorum would do well there?

Meanwhile Romney may be back in the lead in Michigan, but the fact that the state’s primary is an open one means the possibility of shenanigans as Democratic voters could try and hand the state to Santorum. Wouldn’t that be fun?

If Santorum does win in Michigan would it be because conservatives there believe President Obama’s push for more education is intended to produce more liberals? This point never fails to fascinate me–conservatives seem to cede the point that a lack of education and conservative voting go hand in hand when they make this argument. Why would they do that?

Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich is still in the race and killing it in Georgia which seems to sum up Gingrich’s entire vanity campaign so perfectly.

Last but not least, Congress is much older, whiter, richer and more male than the population of the country as a whole. Shocking, I know.

No surprise re. Santorum and the paleoconservatards here, given their belief that they've the right to indoctrinate - their own word - children as they see fit.

Clearly any form of public education stands to undermine such efforts, and must therefore be destroyed.

Eugene W.: Imagine taking all the students from all the classes that you and the rest of the rightwing idiocracy think are "funny"; now let's put them up against an equal number of Teatards of your choosing, and then administer an intelligence test. Of course we know who would win.

And THAT, my slack-jawed friend, is the core correlative with college students being largely [D]: intelligence correlates with a [D] political choice -- intelligence correlates with higher education -- higher education correlates with taking college classes beyond the ken of snickering amoebas like you and Anne Coulter.

You are no more in a position to judge the worth of a college course than you are of recognizing true conservatism. You witless goons, drooling your spittle while your elders on FoxNews read you the daily fairytale, wouldn't know a true conservative if he/she shat on your empty heads.

Heads up! Big News! Colleges offer silly courses.

Another Eugene entry. ""Lady Gaga and the Sociology of Fame" (University of South Carolina, Columbia), "GaGa for Gaga: Sex, Gender and Identity" (University of Virginia), "Arguing With Judge Judy: Popular 'Logic' on TV Judge Shows" (University of California, Berkeley), "The Phallus" (Occidental College), "Zombies" (University of Baltimore), "Comics" (Oregon State University), "Harry Potter: Finding Your Patronus" (Oregon State University), and "Underwater Basket Weaving" (University of California at San Diego)."

Is there a point to this? Are you and Coulter suggesting that this is what Obama was suggesting? Or is it that silly courses mean that all college is silly and a waste of time? I'm not quite sure what you intended with this. That Ann Coulter has way too much time on her hands to sift through college curriculums to find something to discredit that college? That you once again listen to people without an ounce of credibility. Like the practice of cafeteria religion, you can 'prove' anything if you pick out what makes your case and ignore what doesn't suit your argument. And you wonder why no one with a thinking brain takes the right seriously?

Some more of Coulter's column on how colleges make Democrats:

These days, every idiot who can scratch an "X" on his checkbook assumes hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt to make himself less employable by taking college courses in -- for example -- "Lady Gaga and the Sociology of Fame" (University of South Carolina, Columbia), "GaGa for Gaga: Sex, Gender and Identity" (University of Virginia), "Arguing With Judge Judy: Popular 'Logic' on TV Judge Shows" (University of California, Berkeley), "The Phallus" (Occidental College), "Zombies" (University of Baltimore), "Comics" (Oregon State University), "Harry Potter: Finding Your Patronus" (Oregon State University), and "Underwater Basket Weaving" (University of California at San Diego).

Pat B.: Thanks for your good, considered response to Eugene. But don't expect the same back from him. He is a sad clown, playing with sophmoric fairytales and rightwing dogma. You will not find his type engaging in serious discussion. Apparently he is only able to parrot the shrill voices of America's rightwing underbelly -- I mean, seriously, quoting Anne Coulter?....as if that drama queen was somehow the window to reality?!!!!

But let's thank Eugene for exercising his free-speech rights, which allows us all a peek into the supporters of the political malignancy that is trying to push America back to the Stone Age. As our forefathers intended, we are forewarned by the very same people who would destroy us.

Eugene said, "a finer class of person than a skilled plumber with approximately 1,000 times the earning capacity and social worth of the airhead? No. But she is more likely to vote Democratic." You better hope there are a few airheads in America. Those 'airheads' gave you every piece of technology and every medical advancement you have ever used. If America stagnates in people educated in colleges and universities. And they have no reason to be ashamed of that. What is it about some Americans that they hate people who are smart? The people who wrote the Constitution and all those other laws designed to allow you to live free were airheads.

You also should try to listen to what people actually say before you start attaching them. Obama DID NOT SAY all Americans should go to college. What he said was they should get some kind of higher education and that would include trade schools. And he's right. You'd have a hard time getting a job at MacDonalds without at least finishing high school. Anyone who hopes to do more than subsistence living needs higher education.

Now before you hurt yourself you should put down that beer and go listen to the actual speech instead of letting Fox or Santorum or anyone else translate it for you. Just so you don't have to strain yourself, you can find it here: http://www.whitehouse.gov/issues/education

Ann Coulter on college making one liberal:

It's not snobbery that compels liberals to promote college for all; it's a scam to manufacture more Democratic voters, much like their immigration policies.

Is a Valley Girl who takes courses in Self-Esteem at Cal State Fresno (an actual course at an actual college) a finer class of person than a skilled plumber with approximately 1,000 times the earning capacity and social worth of the airhead?

No. But she is more likely to vote Democratic.

Eugene W.: since you seem to be so fond of "simple truths", ones apparently not in need of further discussion or of elucidation of the surrounding facts, here is another one: if you remove from the group of "American kids" those kids in [R]ed states, and re-calculate test scores, that group of "blue" American kids fare MUCH better against their foreign counterparts.

This fact ALONE should give one pause before voting [R], and giving control of our educational system to that gaggle of knuckledraggers.
