Every November, a mustache movement sweeps across the upper lips of America’s men. Thus the mashup name of “Movember.”
Movember is an international charity event that has grown men growing mustaches through the month of November. According to Movember.com, the facial hair movement promotes funds and awareness for men’s health and cancers that affect men, most specifically prostrate cancer.
On November 1st, men register at the site by starting out clean shaven and all throughout the month they grow their hair. The site calls registrants MoBros and their significant female others MoSistas. After the month is up, the MoBros and MoSistas either attend one of the Gala Parties held around the world by Movember, or they throw their own.
Movember began in Melbourne, Australia in 2003. From 2003-2009, global efforts raised $174 million US dollars, and more than one million people registered. In 2010, 64,500 registrants from the United States entered the fray and raised $7.4 million dollars. All funds raised in the US support organizations funded and run by Movember, the Livestrong Foundation and the Prostrate Cancer Foundation.
The Movember Foundation “wants men to take responsibility for their health, prevent illness by leading a healthy lifestyle and understand the symptoms and signs, in both themselves and others, so they can appreciate when and how to seek help if needed.”
This is based on many studies that show that men do not address many of their health issue and do not get regular checkups. Movember is a way to get men talking about these issues and aware of their own health management.
Grow on, guys, grow on!
