Nevada Makes Second Attempt At Banning All Abortions

Nevada Makes Second Attempt At Banning All Abortions

Nevada is taking a “try, try again” approach to banning abortion, some infertility treatments and most forms of birth control in the state by putting forth a “personhood” measure to be included on the 2012 election ballot.  Unlike 2010′s effort, which failed when Personhood USA, who spearheaded the project, was unable to get enough signatures to have a ballot initiative added, this one is being initiated by “Nevada Prolife Coalition,” and claims to have more “clear” message for their petition wording.

In 2010, the Personhood group was unable to gather signatures because the wording of their petition was so vague that the courts ruled a signer may not be completely aware of the intent of the petition itself.  It was also ruled that the description of the amendment was too broad and could possibly impact thousands of other laws in the state.  The 2010 measure said simply, “In the great state of Nevada, the term ”’person’ applies to every human being.”

This time, the abortion opponents have learned their lesson and are working with a much more specific measure. “[T]he petition would prohibit ‘the intentional taking of a prenatal person’s life’ and defines a prenatal person as ‘every human being at all stages of biological development before birth.’”

That they are working again on a personhood measure is fairly expected.  When Personhood USA failed to get the required signatures necessary in time for the 2010 election, they vowed they would return in time to get it accomplished for 2012. It can only be assumed that Gallagher and the Prolife Nevada Coalition are the face of that effort.  But by creating a new group to push the effort, the anti-abortion activists have created a new problem for themselves — they still need to register with the Secretary of State before they can even begin to collect signatures.

To successfully add their amendment to the election ballot, the group needs to gather at least 72,352 valid signatures from across Nevada.

Praise the Lord. Ira, You are quite right about most people who view abortion as the taking of human life. Most of them do think war and the death penalty are just fine. But there are a few out there who view all three as morally equivalent. And these people would say about the hawks and death penalty advocates that they respect human life only before birth - afterwards is quite another matter...

I live in Nevada, and this is a small group of nutjobs that won't give up. Don't assume that most people here live in the dark ages, or that a boycott which punishes everyone is the solution. I don't think these idiots will get away with this even if they do get the signatures, which is doubtful. Unfortunately for rational human beings, these types pop up everywhere, and we must all keep on fighting them wherever they turn up. If they put half as much energy into helping the kids in dysfunctional families, and there are many here, they would accomplish something useful. Instead, they choose to eliminate the right to have a safe, legal abortion while knowing nothing about an individual's personal circumstances which is none of their business anyway. To top it off they want to ban certain forms of birth control which would prevent the need for an abortion. There is no logic there at all.
