New Races, New Faces

There have been a lot of candidates announcing runs across the country. Here are a few of the latest:

Florida Congressman David Rivera is getting his first Democratic challenger, State Representative Luis Garcia.  Rivera, considered to be extremely vulnerable, has had low fundraising and allegations of personal finance issues, making the seat prime for a pickup.

Republican Lt. Governor David Dewhurst has announced he will be joining an already crowded field of Republicans vying for the open senate seat that Kay Bailey Hutchison will be leaving behind.  Hutchison will be retiring at the end of 2012.

And former Republican Congressman Pete Hoekstra has signaled a plan to challenge Michigan Democrat Debbie Stabenow for her senate seat.  Hoekstra last ran a failed campaign for governor, where he lost the endorsement to Rick Synder, who went on to win the governor’s mansion.

When I was a boy, a cousin of mine took me to a NY state political debate. This was for governor, and the place was full of tobacco smoke and the smell of whiskey. My uncle had convinced my dad that it would be an educational experience, which it was, at least in the discussion I had with dad about the evening. My cousin had laryngitis from yelling when he brought me home. My dad explained that my cousin had been paid $10.00 (a good amount of money in those days) to shout down the challenging candidate every time he tried to speak. The governorship went to the challenger anyway.

Why do you only report on Republican candidates Miss Marty? Are there no contested democrat primaries? Have you ever written an article in favor of something or do you only know how to denigrate people. It is a problem I have with progressives, they never want to build something better. They just want to tear existing structures or organizations into pieces.

We need a law that ensures we get QUALIFIED candidates. If you cannot get at least a '4' on the AP tests for US History, US Government, Economics, Statistics, and Environmental Science, you have no business participating in lawmaking, even at a city level.
