Newt Gingrich is out promoting his new book, “To Save America,” and ThinkProgress is all over his repeated claims that the Obama Administration and its partners (Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi) or the “secular-socialist machine” are as “great a threat to America as Nazi Germany and Soviet Union.” That’s Sarah Palin talk!
Gingrich goes on to ridiculously compare progressivism to totalitarianism; forever joining the ranks of irrational conservative pundits like Glenn Beck who cater to far-right conservatives. Since America is still a country in which free speech is protected and in which state terrorism is prohibited, serious talk of totalitarianism in the context of American politics is the province of fools.
To those in the mainstream media still treating Newt Gingrich as a serious thinker, it’s long past time to stop. I’m especially looking directly at you Meet The Press bookers, who booked Gingrich more often than any other guest on their show during 2009. As Steve Benen pointed out, Speaker Pelosi didn’t appear on Meet The Press once during the same time.
So by all means, keep inviting disgraced former House Speaker Newt Gingrich to appear on your show as a serious political thinker. The fact that Gingrich is on your show more often than the sitting Speaker, acknowledged by most serious political thinkers to be one of the most influential Speakers in congressional history, doesn’t affect your credibility at all.
