“Obedient Wives Club” Opens in Indonesia

“Obedient Wives Club” Opens in Indonesia

After the success of Malaysia’s new “Obedient Wives Club,” a group that teaches women to be submissive and encourages them to provide their husbands with a fulfilling sex life, Indonesian women will now have the opportunity to learn to be “100 percent obedient to [their] husband[s] in all aspects.”  According to NPR, about 50 women and their husbands attended the club’s launch at a restaurant in southern Jakarta earlier this weekend.

The group was founded by the conservative Malaysian organization Global Ikhwan, which claims that it can “cure social ills such as prostitution and divorce” by promoting female subordination.  It has hundreds of members in several Malaysian cities.

“Islam compels us to be obedient to our husband. Whatever he says, I must follow. It is a sin if I don’t obey and make him happy,” said one woman.

There was significant backlash to the group in Malaysia by women’s rights activists and government officials.  But Global Ikhwan said that it expected this kind of reaction, and that they hoped to expand across southeast Asia.

“This is a violation of women because women have the right to be independent and to be respected as human beings,” said Husein Muhammad, a theologian who is also a commissioner of the National Commission on Violence Against Women (Komnas Perempuan), told the Jakarta Globe.  “I see this as a new style of slavery, and sadly, they do this in the name of religion.”

One of the most bizarre aspects of the group is the explicitness with which they tackle sex.  “Sex is a taboo in Asian society,” explained one of the group’s founders.  “We have ignored it in our marriages but it’s all down to sex. A good wife is a good sex worker to her husband. What is wrong with being a whore…to your husband?”

Of course, as Care2′s Annie Urban pointed out when the Malaysian club was founded, obedience is not the key to a happy marriage, even if women are taught to be less shy about sex.  There is absolutely no way for women to be equals in a relationship like the one promoted by the Obedient Wives Club, and it’s distressing to see such a damaging organization spreading throughout southeast Asia.

this club are meant for husbands will not seek out sex satisfaction outsides homes.. if they like how the prostitute act the wife will do it for them.. the wife will become the night butterfly.. and i think that is what most women overlooked when they get married.. things are taken for granted.. wife become fat, unattractive and so on.. men always look for fun and i believed this club were created to overcome mens needs and to stop prostitution. In reliogious views some have commented well.

I would join, but I'd probably get arrested... What's obedient? I was always the one going against the grain, and that was when I was a small child. I was anti-establishment back in high school, and went against the status quo in college. Now I'm changing and adding laws to go against pedophiles, and to equalize the system regarding abused men, for they need emergency shelter, support and services also.

The way I figure, the best way for ME to be obedient is to be true to myself. Not to a man. And my hubby appreciates that very independence and passion for equality in me. If I were to lose that, we wouldn't have a marriage.

That kind of thought disgusts me, and well, it goes to show that when you don't allow your young girls to become educated, they don't understand their own potential. Brainwashing is a power tool for these bastards who prey on these women.

This article disgusts me! I am NOT an obedient wife but my husband and I are partners!!! If those women are so weak that they can't stand up, they they deserve to be in the club!!

Well, it's their choice; as long as they don't expect the rest of women to follow, I don't care what they do.

In Indonesia Muslims have just set up the country's first "obedient wives club". What is a good politically correct -- especially feminist -- person supposed to do in such a situation? On one hand, logic would dictate that the entire concept of an "obedient wives club" would be the epitome of unacceptable patriarchal exploitation and oppression. But, on the other, one dare not criticize people of a certain darker skin color, for fear of being tainted with the whiff of intolerance and racism. What to do?

Well, within the world of political correctness there are certain hierarchies of specialness. The greatest holy of holiest within the pantheon is a question of race. The question of gender or sex is second in order of importance. So, whenever issues of race and sex conflict (such as this case in Indonesia), issues of race almost always take precedence over issues of gender. That is why feminists -- who never cease to talk about the unending horrors of male oppression and white America and -- suddenly develop lockjaw when it comes to much worse treatment of females in places like the Muslim world. If it were not sad, that would be amusing to see how feminists routinely come up with all kinds of apologies and rationalizations and excuses for why the treatment of women in the Muslim world "really isn't so bad", and we shouldn't worry about it. Now that we've gotten that out of the way, let's get back to our favorite topic of detailing in exquisite detail all of the ways that w

Emily W,
I also happen to know that Global Ikhwan is a new name for Darul Arqam Malaysia which is a deviant group and banned by the Malaysian government for their cult practices and wife swapping 15 years or more ago. Some people thought there have reformed themselves for better. If they haven't, who can help them?

So yes, I agree with you that this is extreme and this is not from Islam if they want to obey their husband 100%.

I am not being a wise ass. But are there any scholars out there who can name one "atheistic" leader…

Devastating statistic, especially as these icons of the north have slow reproduction rates. Sadly, Canada…

The brave people who are speaking out are taking a big step toward public acceptance by bringing awareness.…
